It was one of the casting directors and she said that they loved me and they were wanting me to come back in for an on camera interview. She sent me an email that I was moving on to the next and final stage of casting. I got the email and it was a long list of things that I had to do. You don’t want to spend all of the time it takes to do all of this and not get picked for the show. The good thing is that I have my eating plan to fall back on and my family is always here for me. The show is slightly based on the original concept of Extreme Makeover, where individuals receive life-changing makeovers. The show however has faced criticisms over the health implications of rapid weight loss and misleading claims that the fitness trainer stays 3 months with the dieters.[ citation needed ]  On September 20, 2010, Chris Powell was announced as the trainer for the show, renamed Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. The series officially premiered on May 30, 2011 and was the top summer launch for an ABC series debut since August 2009.  The third season, now renamed Extreme Weight Loss,  premiered on May 28, 2013.
It was running from his demons that led him here and unfortunately that’s the only running he’s used. Chris figures she can lose about 85 of those and he’s volunteered to help her for the next three months. And that’s why at the end of her 90 days – she didn’t meet her goal. Charita was supposed to lose 85 pounds and what she lost was 75. The only difference is that now he’s going to have to go out and get it on his own. So what was his motivation for losing the weight? The only downside was that she again missed out on her goal weight. And with much regret the doctor told her that she needed to lose a few more before he was prepared to do surgery. When she gets to that weight then and only then will the doctor agree to remove her extra skin. At the end of the show, Charita was left alone on that stage and she stood proudly as she was weighed.
As you know I’m not a fan of NBC’s hit weight loss show The Biggest Loser. But is the format – and the training – any better? And her home support system wasn’t the greatest. While watching the show, the look of the show and some of the commercial cutaways were reminiscent of Loser, but that’s where the similarities end. In fact, 90% of the show’s weight loss and work occurred without Powell present. That’s about 13.5 pounds per month; a far cry from the double-digit numbers posted weekly on The Biggest Loser, and in my opinion a much more healthy and reasonable rate of weight loss. What I like about the show was that it seemed to address more of the real issues surrounding weight gain and loss; home life, emotion issues, and the psychology that plays a tremendous part in success. I think it’s important to not just show the before and after, but explain the in between. Overall, the pilot episode was good, and I’m pleased to say a departure from the usual ‘unreal reality’ weight loss shows. Sure the show was rough around the edges but it did a great job of conveying a real journey, with a real person, in a real setting, and ending with a real result. And Chris Powell seems like the right guy for the job.

With only 3 months left, the only remaining option is to move in with Chris and Heidi so they can help him reach his goal of 299 lbs. Charita is a 32 year old hair stylist weighing in at 310 lbs and believes high school cheerleading were her glory days. She now wants to be an active and involved mother to her three sons but the weight is keeping her from it. Chris' goal for her is 85 lbs in 90 days. Apparent at her 90 day weigh-in where instead of 85 lbs lost, she is only 75 lbs down. Her Phase II goal is 40 more pounds. She can work out AND provide for her family. At her 6 month weigh-in she is down to 203 pounds. Her Phase III goal is to get down to skin removal surgery weight. So Chris and Heidi bring her to Arizona to fix the gap in her teeth (it was bothering her, not them), to boost her confidence a little more. At her 9 month weigh-in Charita is down to 186 lbs! Unfortunately the surgeon doesn't believe her 124 pound weight loss is enough, she needs to be down to 165 to qualify. Charita has other plans, she believes she will reach her goal and then some. At her 365 day weigh-in she is at 160!

An episode of ABC’s Extreme Weight Loss (EWL) program always begins with such optimism and the first episode of Season 4 was no exception. They were given the opportunity to lose an extreme amount of body weight and change their lives forever while the whole world observed their transformation. Unfortunately while two deserving people started their journey, only one, Charita, finished the 365-day life-changing journey and cashed in her golden ticket to a new way of life. The goal is for everyone to transform their life in their own unique way. No one ever gets voted out, no one competes for a spot and everyone CAN BE the hero in their own life story. Thinking back over the year that I worked with Charita and Ty, I see many similarities between the two. Both spent the first 90 days of their journey at Boot Camp at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center in Aurora. When it comes to weight loss I like to say the “what” is important but that’s really only half the equation - the “why” is the other half and it’s just as important. Both Ty and Charita knew exactly “what” to do to lose weight but they differed greatly on why they were doing it! Chris picking Ty for the show was not ultimately enough.
Chris Powell of ‘Extreme Weight Loss’ on the Diet and Exercise Mistakes Most People Make. “When it comes to weight loss, diet is at the foundation for everything,” said Powell, the host of ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss.” Powell said the single biggest diet mistake lies in thinking you have to accomplish it all at once. “If I say to you, ‘Look, you can't have pizza anymore,’ what is it that you want?” said Powell. It’s a method that dietitians have recommended for the last few decades, alternating high-carb and low-carb days. “On the low-carb days, you get the results of a low-carb diet,” explained Powell. You eat high-carbs on the days you want to boost your metabolism and build some muscle. When Powell was a child, he was the smallest in his class and a target for bullies. And just as with diet, Powell – who prefers to work out in the mornings - said the biggest mistake when devising a fitness plan is trying to tackle too much. And Powell said that kind of promise can be fulfilled in less than 10 minutes every weekday.

He also calls out that they never followed the diet described on the show. They did set up a ranch and several of the contestants moved their for several months because they weren’t going to make their numbers. It was in Arizona, and you didn’t see that on the show because they wanted to tell you that we were able to do it on our own at home in our real environments. I was recruited to be on this show, I never wrote a letter and chances are if you did its not going to be anwsered. I had lost almost 100lbs on my own before the show and in fact told them in the final interview room that I did not think this was my last chance, and that the decision to save my life was something I made long ago and it wasnt theirs to make. The show was only concerned with “getting the numbers” for their episode, not James’ life or habits or any of that. At what point do you say “Enough!” and back out, especially when you acknowledge that what you were doing was wrong? They all follow the same formula to me, and by that logic I’m pretty much over the idea of supporting one.
Ty Ash wants to get down to 300 pounds to play pro. The contestants on the upcoming season of ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss” have many reasons for wanting to lose weight, but 19-year-old Ty Ash’s is unique: The 480-pound baseball phenomenon wants to get down to 300 pounds to play professionally. ABC says agents and coaches have told him that the only thing standing between him and a professional contract is his weight. For His Weight NFL.com reports that his weight peaked at 448 pounds in 2011, but he is now listed at 375 . Ash, of Oklahoma City, is trying to get down to the same weight as the Cincinnatti Reds’ Jonathan Broxton, who appears to be the heaviest current baseball player at 300 pounds. He is also the heaviest contestant on this season’s “Extreme Weight Loss,” which also features a former pageant queen, a former gymnast and cheerleader, and the first little person ever to appear on the show.
Rachel: Oh, my goodness, the very first time I ever saw Chris Powell I remember calling up my mom and sisters and was like, "This guy is so hot; if they want me to lose weight, all they got to do is put him in front of me and let me chase after him." I thought he was the best-looking thing ever and then when I got to talk to him and know his personality I'm like, "Oh, no, this man is unbelievable." He's one-of-a-kind, but he's also like my big brother. Rachel: During that first workout all that kept going through my head was: Am I really going to do this? I knew that if I could make it through that first workout, there was going to be no turning back for me; I was not going to quit this journey no matter what. Starting and finishing that workout was like me starting and finishing that journey. The only time I've ever wanted to quit was during that first workout and then after that I've been full force wanting it more than anything. The hardest part was that I had the mindset that they had to change and do what I was doing, but you cannot force anyone to change or help someone who doesn't want to be helped or think they need it. So as soon as I got in my mindset that I was going to do whatever it took and do my own thing and let them do their own thing, it got so much better. I actually am thankful for that because it's helped me with the fact that I do have self-control and I could do it no matter what. When I was in Greece I had ice cream for the first time and as soon as I got a taste for it I was like: Oh, no. I did not ask for help at all, I thought could do it and I put all that pressure on myself and wound up letting myself down. I knew I had to move on and not let it anger me for the rest of that year. Rachel: The greatest lesson I've learned from him is that I was worth it. I had never truly devoted myself to losing this weight, I would go into it half-heartedly and never finish anything and he'd be like, "Rachel, you can do this." I learned that and it's stuck in my head and I feel like I can conquer anything. I'd like to go maybe around 190, but other than that I am very happy with the way I look and the way I feel.
