Kaiser Permanente Share - For Gastric Bypass Patients

Kaiser Permanente researchers also found gastric bypass to be most effective type of bariatric surgery among patients with extreme obesity. 鈥 Non-Hispanic white patients who underwent a gastric bypass procedure lost slightly more weight over a three-year period than Hispanic or black patients, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published in the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases . The study also examined two types of bariatric surgery and found that patients who underwent the now common gastric bypass procedure lost more weight over the same period than patients who underwent the more recently developed vertical sleeve gastrectomy procedure. Researchers examined the Kaiser Permanente electronic health records of more than 20,000 racially and ethnically diverse patients in Southern California who underwent bariatric surgery from 2004 through May 2013. The study also found that overall, gastric bypass patients lost an average of 59 percent of excess weight (an average 81.5 pounds) and vertical sleeve gastrectomy patients lost an average of 46 percent (57.6 pounds) after three years of follow-up. 鈥淪tudies have shown that bariatric surgery is associated with sustainable weight loss for patients with extreme obesity, but there is very little research to show how these procedures affect persons of different races and ethnicities, especially in the long term,鈥 said study lead author Karen J. 鈥淭o address the current gaps in the knowledge about bariatric surgery, we created a registry of patients who underwent surgery to monitor quality and safety outcomes and assist clinicians who are caring for these patients after their surgery.鈥 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 34 percent of U. This study is part of Kaiser Permanente鈥檚 broader efforts to deliver transformational health research focusing on bariatric surgery and its impact on patients with extreme obesity. Last October, a Kaiser Permanente study found that the impact of bariatric surgery on risk factors for cardiovascular disease depends upon a variety of factors, including the type of surgery, sex of the patient, race and ethnic background and pre-surgery body mass index. Located in Pasadena, Calif., the department focuses on translating research to practice quickly to benefit the health and lives of Kaiser Permanente Southern California members and the general population. Scripps Mercy busiest in weight - loss surgeries

Scripps Mercy busiest in weight-loss surgeries. Statewide last year, 94 hospitals did 14,609 bariatric surgeries, an average of 155.4 per hospital. 鈥 Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego (Has contract with Kaiser Permanente to perform bariatric surgeries for its members): 1,329. When Jennie Stewart had weight-loss surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego last month, she didn鈥檛 go there because the hospital does the most bariatric surgeries in the state. Kaiser鈥檚 longstanding contract with Scripps Mercy to do all weight-loss surgeries for its 500,000-strong San Diego membership made the Hillcrest hospital the busiest in the state for bariatric surgeries in 2010. Last year, about 85 percent of the Scripps Mercy bariatric surgeries were for Kaiser members. Demand among Kaiser patients is so high that, statewide, four of the seven hospitals doing more than 500 bariatric surgeries in 2010 were either Kaiser hospitals or have contracts with Kaiser, state records show. Brookey said Kaiser has 3.4 million members throughout Southern California and bariatric surgeries have increased six-fold in the last five years. At Scripps Mercy, all weight-loss surgeries are done by a four-physician medical practice, Pacific Bariatric Surgical Group. Those 1,329 procedures accounted for 9 percent of the 14,609 bariatric surgeries done at hospitals statewide, and 62 percent of those done in San Diego County. Brookey said Kaiser refers some patients from throughout Southern California to Pacific Bariatric, and doctors from the group travel around the region to hold clinics and informational meetings for prospective Kaiser patients.

Kaiser Permanente is Southern California - PRE

After doing a lot of research and reading all I can on the subject, I've come to the conclusion that Bariactric surgery would be right for me. After reviewing my medical records and a question and answer session with me to determine if I would be a good candidate for the surgery, he approved me to continue in the program. The program involves information about the procedure, weekly weigh-ins, a three phase diet to physically prepare the body and the mind for the surgery, nutritional guidance, and weight management. This seems like a long time and a lot to go through for the procedure, but it's well worth the time. I am 99.9% sure I want to go through with the surgery, but there is that bit of apprehension and fear. I think the the KP Options program will both mentally and physically prepare for the procedure and will prepare me to succeed. It really is almost effortless, and it's so great to know that the weight is NOT coming back on this time. The "plateau" will be defeated as long as the participant sticks with the program and continues to exercise. For me, this spoke highly of the program. One concern I had was that If someone were to loose too much weight and reduce their BMI, could this be a reason for the surgery to be denied. My initial meeting with the Bariatric surgeon was on June 8th and my weight was 324 pounds.

Few Insurers Provide Coverage For Weight Loss Treatment

鈥淚nsurers will cover sleep apnea and diabetes, but not the treatment that could have prevented sleep apnea and diabetes,鈥 two conditions linked to obesity, said Jennifer S. Lee and her colleagues reported in a recent study 聽that many states allow insurers to charge obese patients higher premiums or deny coverage of the condition altogether. They also found that only a handful mandate coverage for any of the three evidence-based treatment methods : bariatric surgery, medications, and nutritional assessment and behavioral counseling, which are classified as lifestyle measures. Researchers found that regular exercise and modest weight loss sharply reduced the risk of developing diabetes 鈥 more than medication did 鈥 a benefit that has persisted for more than a decade. The program covers up to four visits with a physician that focus only on weight loss and a maximum of six visits with a nutritionist annually, as well as the use of obesity drugs, which the insurance company鈥檚 chief medical officer, Don Bradley, said are little-used, in part because of concerns about their side effects. Physician Arthur Frank, founder and co-director of the GWU Weight Management Program, says the demand for proof that programs like his work is often used by insurers as a smokescreen to deny payment. Frank says the lack of insurance coverage is predicated on the view that nonsurgical treatment rarely works and that obesity is a matter of 鈥減ersonal misconduct,鈥 not faulty neurochemistry. Restrictive operations like gastric sleeve surgery make the stomach smaller and help people lose weight. You will have some belly pain and may need pain medicine for the first week or so after surgery. Because the surgery makes your stomach smaller, you will get full more quickly when you eat. Your doctor will give you specific instructions about what to eat after the surgery. For about the first month after surgery, your stomach can only handle small amounts of soft foods and liquids while you are healing. You may notice that your bowel movements are not regular right after your surgery. If your stomach stretches, you will not benefit from your surgery. Surgery may also be an option when your BMI is 35 or higher and you have a life-threatening or disabling problem that is related to your weight. It is important to think of this surgery as a tool to help you lose weight. This will help you reach your weight goal and avoid regaining the weight you lose.
