New Reality Show Tackles Extreme Obesity - ABC News

The "extreme" in this summer's new reality TV show "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition" doesn't necessarily refer to the tactics used by personal trainer Chris Powell. It's the severity of the obesity that makes this show different. The eight contestants who will be the stars of the show were all turned away from another ABC weight loss show, " The Biggest Loser ," because the intense workouts might have been a health concern . While these particpants may have the most weight to lose of any reality TV makeover, the approach taken by "Extreme Makeover" may be the healthiest, most doctor-approved approach yet. The "Biggest Loser" approach, with intense calorie-restriction and a competitive environment, "is not the way I would have most people lose weight," says Dr. But the fact that makeovers take place over the course of an entire year in the contestants homes, with participants often fending for themselves for weeks at a time, makes this kind of reality weight-loss makeover more likely to stick, says Dr. "The longer weight loss takes, the more likely it is to be part of a lifestyle change, and that's when you have real weight loss. "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition," which premieres on Monday, May 30, was conceived as a way to tackle the weight-loss issues of the morbidly obese, but also to show a dramatic weight loss that didn't take place in the context of a secluded environment and under constant guidance, as on "The Biggest Loser." "I kept hearing people say [of 'The Biggest Loser'], 'Yeah well if I had a trainer and a perfect ranch and a fridge full of healthy food, I could do that too!'" Roth says. "People who are used to being nice and not complaining much, all of a sudden they find that they're not swallowing their emotions by eating, so everything's on the surface.

Biggest Loser' trainer : Weight loss is 'all about your

Trainer Bob Harper has put "The Biggest Loser" contestants through grueling fitness regimens, but now believes you can't just exercise the pounds away. Celebrity trainer Bob Harper, of the weight-loss TV show "The Biggest Loser," has built a career putting very obese people through some grueling fitness paces but if he's learned anything from the experience, it's that diet trumps exercise every time. The Los Angeles-based trainer, who was born on a cattle farm in Tennessee and arrived in California some 20 years ago, said gone are the days when he believed it was possible to just exercise the pounds away. "It is all about your diet," Harper, 48, said during a break from filming Season 15 of the long-running U. Harper has spun his TV fame improving the fitness of people who are 100 pounds (45 kg) or more overweight into an empire with DVD workouts and the best-selling book "The Skinny Rules," which offers tips to drop excess weight. Harper said the workout is aimed at getting the heart rate up because that's when people are going to be able to burn fat and when fat is burned off, the abdominal muscles are exposed. "I'm working with people who are 500 pounds (227 kg) and doing Crossfit on a regular basis," said Harper, who described the approximately 20-minute workout as well-balanced. Mark Kelly, an exercise physiologist at the American Council on Exercise, said that even with supervision, Crossfit can be risky if the fitness groundwork isn't in place. Even with coaching, the foundation of stability, mobility and psychomotor skill has to be laid (first)," he said. Kelly agrees that diet is the main factor that can lower weight, but it's exercise, he adds, that allows that lower weight to stick. "And the No. Harper said he values working with people who have gotten far off the diet and fitness track more than the celebrity status conferred upon him by reality TV.

Chris Powell of 'Extreme Makeover : Weight Loss Edition

Chris Powell, the man who orchestrates each jaw-dropping weight transformation on "Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition," says his secret as a hard-charging training has less to do with exercising people's bodies than exorcising their demons. "There is a tie to some kind of emotional trauma, in the past, of people I've worked with, and that trauma is typically unaddressed," he said. Powell has helped 11 super-obese people lose more than a ton of weight on the show: 2,198 pounds, to be exact. But in addition to helping people shrink to half their size, Powell also has gotten them to open up about a whole range of psychological issues, including sexual abuse and alcoholism. The trainer is known for moving in with his clients to makeover their lives and to break their bad habits. "I was so weak and vulnerable at that time that I just felt empowered and what gave it to me was fitness, iron, and I was hooked," he said. "We really met at the deepest, darkest part in both of our lives and it gave us a wonderful foundation to open up and say, 'Here's who I am," said Heidi Powell, who is also a trainer. It was in that low moment that Chris Powell said he learned to overcome his fear of failure and also vowed that he would teach others how to be healthy. He even had the Roman numerals I, C, D, M, X, C and M tattooed onto his side. Powell said it symbolizes how many people have thanked him for making a positive change in their lives.

Extreme Weight Loss - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Extreme Weight Loss. Extreme Weight Loss (originally titled Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition) is a television program from ABC in which individuals volunteer to receive training and lifestyle changes from trainer Chris Powell and his wife, Heidi Powell. The show is slightly based on the original concept of Extreme Makeover, where individuals receive life-changing makeovers. The show however has faced criticisms over the health implications of rapid weight loss and misleading claims that the fitness trainer stays 3 months with the dieters.[ citation needed ] [1] On September 20, 2010, Chris Powell was announced as the trainer for the show, renamed Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. The series officially premiered on May 30, 2011 and was the top summer launch for an ABC series debut since August 2009. [4] The third season, now renamed Extreme Weight Loss, [5] premiered on May 28, 2013.

Fast Weight Loss : Extreme Makeover

(Of course, you should always check with your physician to see what would work best for you.) "On the show, we start each day with the promise to move for five minutes. It doesn't matter what you do; start with marching in place while watching TV," said Powell. If you can keep that, you can accomplish whatever comes your way. Your love for yourself and confidence grows, and the more that blossoms, the more promises you keep. "You don't see it on the show, but our contestants drink a lot of water. "When trying to transform, you don't have to take quantum leaps," said Powell, "but vow to take [added] sugar out of just one meal." And once you step on the scale after a month, you see progress and think 'Oh my gosh! "Instead of doing what we said we were going to do, we tend to tell you all the reasons we couldn't. But I'm always looking for the people that come to me saying 'Chris, I binged last night and I'm out of control,' because those are the people who take ownership of their actions," revealed Powell. When that happens, reach out to the people with whom you united," Powell said. "And just as we do on the show, take these steps: One, confess to unload your emotional weight. Countless studies have linked the support of friends and family to increased weight loss success; and connecting with others helps you feel more accountable for your actions. "Inside it, put a picture of what you are doing this for, whether it's for your spouse, children or dream body," said Powell.

How To Lose Weight and Keep it Off

You eat less, exercise more and the weight is supposed to come off. The fact is, I'll bet you already know how to lose weight . You already know these numbers, probably as well as any weight loss expert: You know that, to lose one pound of fat , you have to burn about 3500 calories over and above what you already burn each day. You don't really want to burn 3500 calories in one day, but rather to cut that down into daily calorie deficits, say cutting 500 calories a day with a combination of diet and exercise. Your BMR is the most important part of the weight loss calculations because it tells you how many calories your body needs to maintain bodily functions such as breathing and digesting and well, existing. This is the minimum number of calories you need to eat each day. For this you multiply your activity level with your BMR : Keep track of how many calories you eat . For at least a week, enter and track your calories online (e.g., with Calorie Count or Fit Watch ) or use a food journal to write down what you eat and drink each day. After a week, add your totals for each day and average them out to get a general idea of how many calories you eat each day. Calculate the thermic effect of food (TEF) - Multiply your total food calories by 10%.

Former Extreme Makeover : Weight Loss

He says that post was also followed up by personal emails to Roth and Powell, explaining his health problems, the $50,000 in hospital bills from the past year, and asking for help with it all, which he says were ignored. The only response he got was a cease and desist from show attorneys, which he posts a copy of on his blog. They were all threatening calls, and none of which was about helping me. One such email is from Chris Powell to the show’s participants encouraging them and outlining for them how to do a flush to help them lose up to an extra 30 pounds of water weight before their weigh ins. He also calls out that they never followed the diet described on the show. They did set up a ranch and several of the contestants moved their for several months because they weren’t going to make their numbers. It was in Arizona, and you didn’t see that on the show because they wanted to tell you that we were able to do it on our own at home in our real environments. I was recruited to be on this show, I never wrote a letter and chances are if you did its not going to be anwsered. I had lost almost 100lbs on my own before the show and in fact told them in the final interview room that I did not think this was my last chance, and that the decision to save my life was something I made long ago and it wasnt theirs to make. The show was only concerned with “getting the numbers” for their episode, not James’ life or habits or any of that. At what point do you say “Enough!” and back out, especially when you acknowledge that what you were doing was wrong? They all follow the same formula to me, and by that logic I’m pretty much over the idea of supporting one.

Weight Loss Tips from Biggest Loser Trainers

Here's what they know about diet and fitness success. Losing weight and keeping it off, says Jillian Michaels, "requires a holistic approach that combines proper diet, good workouts, knowing why you overeat, and understanding how to push yourself toward change." The desire to change, she adds, really has to come from inside. "Sometimes you've got to have hit bottom, like realizing you can't play tag with your kids without getting out of breath," Jillian says. "If you're not ready for something new, no matter what you try, it's not going to work." No matter what your genes are, you have the ability to make the right choices about eating and exercise." The main thing is to make peace with your body before you try to change it, says Bob Harper. Accepting where you are at the moment takes away the white-knuckle feeling that can sabotage you fast: 'I've got to lose weight! "You can learn about nutrition and diets on Web sites like howstuffworks.com or through books like Nutrition for Dummies ," says Bob. "You can't just jump into an exercise program without knowing what you're doing," says Jillian. "At best you'll waste your time; at worst you could get injured." Find a beginner class or trainer to teach you the nuts and bolts. "Crunch Fitness puts out some awesome books that show all the basics," she says, "including Beginner's Luck , by Brad Hamler, and Perfect Posture , by Scott G. "You need to track what you eat in detail. And why are you eating just then? Writing it down makes you accountable and aware, and it helps you identify the mistakes you're making. Maybe you feel like you're not eating that much but, when you add it up, it comes to 2,500 calories a day."

The Real Deal With Waist Training - The Dr. Oz Show

The Real Deal With Waist Training. What you need to know about the latest weight-loss fad and how it can harm your health. That’s the basis for the newest trend in weight loss called "waist training." But is this a proven and safe method for healthy weight loss? The theory behind waist training is that the waist will begin to conform to the rigid shape of the garment. Over time, the hope is the body will maintain that shape and inches will be lost, creating a leaner and slimmer appearance. However, there is no evidence to show that this change will remain permanent without wearing the garment. There is also the theory that the stomach will be squeezed into a smaller shape, causing less hunger and less overall intake of calories with weight loss as a result. As the stomach and colon are prevented from moving its contents, heartburn and chronic constipation can occur. There are many safe and proven ways to reach your individual goal and achieve the perfect-for-you healthy body.

Weight - Loss Rules From a Trainer - POPSUGAR Fitness

If you're counting down to a warm-weather vacation or wedding or just want to look your best all year round, now's the time to get the weight-loss formula right. We spoke to Tracey Mallett, founder of The Booty Barre , for her simple tips on losing weight and feeling your best the smart way. Make it a mix: Once and for all, don't avoid those weights if you want to lose weight. "The best way for people to want to lose weight is a combination of cardio and strength training activity to increase muscle mass," advises Tracey. Clean up your diet: Exercise is important, but Tracey says it's the smaller part of the weight-loss formula: "80 percent of what goes into the body is what you look like, and then 20 percent is exercise." However, "even though exercise seems like a small percentage, it's really not, because you don't want to be skinny and fat; you want to have muscle mass, so it's important you do both." Stick to whole foods like vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, and lean protein, Tracey recommends, making sure you watch out for starchy carbs, added sugars, and too-big portions. Don't go too fast: You shouldn't be losing any more than one to two pounds a week, Tracey says, so make sure you're eating enough to fuel your new workout routine.
