Can Spicy Food Help With Weight Loss

According to researchers from the University of Wyoming, the answer is yes, and it lies in the common chili pepper. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chilis that makes them hot. It is actually a plant protection mechanism that causes a burning sensation in the mouths of animals and humans. At some point, they had capsaicin added to their diet, at about 0.01% of the food. The mice did not gain weight even though they ate and drank the same as before. The researchers postulate that the capsaicin causes white fat cells to turn into brown fat cells. When we exercise, the brown cells are turned into energy – fat burning. Spices and Herbs for Weight Loss - Natural Weight Loss

"Ginger is an antioxidant powerhouse and is loaded with capsaicin, the same compound that puts the 'hot' in hot peppers," says Los Angeles–based registered dietitian and Lauren Conrad.com nutrition expert Shira Lenchewski . "Studies have found that capsaicin may temporarily speed up the metabolism, resulting in increased calorie burn." One study published in the journal Metabolism found that ginger "enhances the thermic effect of food and promotes feelings of satiety." This spice can be added to tea, salad dressings (like a ginger-orange dressing), and sauces (think a peanut-ginger sauce on top of a stir-fry dish). The liver, which is the body's largest gland and sits right next to the stomach, is essential for digestion and metabolism, along with storing nutrients in the body. Now it can also be known as a fat burner, says clinical nutritionist Cynthia Pasquella , founder and director of the Institute of Transformational Nutrition and author of The Hungry Hottie Cookbook. One study published in the British Journal of Nutrition states that carnosic acid, found in rosemary, can limit weight gain while reducing fasting blood glucose levels—the technical term for blood sugar levels when the body goes without food for between eight and 12 hours (usually overnight). Another study , this one conducted by researchers from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that rosemary (along with extracts of Greek oregano and Mexican oregano) contains more compounds—polyphenols and flavonoids—than other herbs and spices, which helped block a type-2-diabetes-related enzyme. "And just like turmeric, this spice will also kick-start even the most stubborn immune systems, helping to fight off colds and germs," says Pasquella. Made from the mustard plant and considered a member of the cruciferous vegetable family, this sharp-tasting spice also has metabolism-boosting qualities. Another study found that melatonin (the same hormone that regulates sleep), which is found in mustard, stimulates the appearance of "beige fat," a group of fat cells that burns calories and helps regulate weight control. According to information published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, piperine interrupts new fat cells from forming, and "in doing so, piperine may also set off a metabolic chain reaction that helps keep fat in check in other ways." A few shakes of black pepper can be added to sauces (like black pepper sauce for steaks and Asian dishes), as well as used in chicken dishes (such as black-pepper-garlic chicken). Professors at Penn State studied a number of spices, including cinnamon, and concluded that adding this antioxidant seasoning to a high-fat meal decreased insulin response by 20 percent while also reducing triglyceride levels—a type of fat that can lead to heart disease and stroke—by 30 percent.

Benefits of Spicy Foods - Berkeley Wellness

Some research, in animals and humans, suggests that the capsaicin and capsaicin-related compounds in chili peppers can speed metabolism, increase fat burning and curb appetite. In a 2011 study of young lean people, published in Physiology and Behavior, consuming chili pepper in a meal led to reduced food intake and less hunger for fatty and salty foods—though only in people who didn’t normally eat spicy foods. That is, any benefit of spicy foods may subside with regular consumption. Studies have not consistently found that spicy foods worsen heartburn in people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), however. Studies are mixed about whether spicy foods increase the risk of esophageal cancer. Chili peppers have been blamed for causing ulcers, but there’s no evidence that even the hottest ones are harmful. Bottom line: If you like spicy foods and they like you, go ahead and turn up the heat. If they are a factor, you don’t necessarily have to eliminate all spicy foods, but you may want to at least tone it down.

The Health Benefits of Spicy Food

Spicy Foods Are Good for Your Heart and More. Spicy foods increase satiety, helping you to feel full while eating less, and hot peppers may even help your body to burn more calories. Part of the benefit may be due to capsaicin's heat potential, as it is a thermogenic substance that may temporarily increase thermogenesis in your body, where your body burns fuel such as fat to create heat, with beneficial impacts on your metabolism and fat-burning potential. Research suggests that consuming thermogenic ingredients may boost your metabolism by up to 5 percent, and increase fat burning by up to 16 percent. The nerve cells are no longer able to respond to capsaicin (or indeed, anything that might cause pain) and so you are no longer able to perceive pain. Peppers are only one type of spice, and when it comes to experiencing the full range of health benefits spicy foods offer, variety is key. In the case of your sex life, it’s not the spice from chili peppers but that from ginseng and saffron that showed benefit. This spice may help to boost your metabolism, and it also has impressive benefits for blood sugar regulation, making it an ideal seasoning for people with diabetes or pre-diabetes . Cardamom , an aromatic spice with a spicy-sweet flavor, is another thermogenic herb that helps boost your metabolism and may boost your body's ability to burn fat. And remember that even though the spice might feel painful, it’s just an illusion. Even if you can eat spicy foods without discomfort, they are still linked with more time spent awake during the night and taking longer to fall asleep. As for the notion that you should avoid spicy foods if you’ve got stomach issues, this is a myth – hot chilies may actually be protective.

The Spicy Food Weight - Loss Plan - Men's Journal

A new study shows that the same receptors in the body that respond to capsaicin (producing that well-known burning sensation) are also partly responsible for telling the brain when you've had enough to eat. When we eat, our stomachs stretch and activate nerves that tell the brain we're getting full, says Amanda Page , an associate professor at the University of Adelaide in Australia and senior author on the study, in an email. The study found that the activation of these nerves is at least partly regulated by our capsaicin receptors. One implication is that eating more capsaicin could activate these receptors and cause people to feel more full, thus reducing their food intake and helping with weight loss. The catch: The new study also found that high-fat diets disrupted the capsaicin receptors in mice, making them less sensitive to the stretching in their stomachs and prone to eating more. If the same holds true in humans, then high-fat diets could cause people to over-eat and have trouble losing weight, Page says.

Lose Weight by Eating Spicy Food? Weight Loss

I recently read an article in First for Woman that says you can lose weight by eating spicy food. That sounds too good to be true, so I did some more research about it and it seem that the ingredient capsaicin (which is in foods such as habaneros, jalapenos and other spicey foods) really can help people lose weight. They also claim that capsaicin helps decrease your appetite and it's also a powerful antioxidant. Doctors are saying that if you're trying to lose weight, you still need to limit your calories, eat healthy, and exercise. According to the article I read, you multiply your body weight (in pounds) with 68 and that gives you how many micrograms of capsaicin you need. What do you think?

Spicy Food Beats Dangerous Weight Loss Surgery - Wake Up

Weight loss surgery is often considered by obese individuals and mainstream doctors despite the serious risk and invasive nature, but researchers have revealed that a natural alternative can be utilized that may be just as effective without the surgery. The substance responsible for the extreme reduction in abdominal fat (described as ‘beer belly fat’) is known as capsaicin, which is actually the ingredient in chili peppers and other spicy food that causes the familiar ‘burning spice’ sensation. When scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) examined caspaicin, they were amazed to find that the ingredient can naturally lead to fat loss and fight obesity – related diseases with fewer side effects than invasive bariatric surgery options. Published in the journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences , the authors revealed that caspaicin could be a natural method of combating obesity that is nearly as effective as intensive surgeries — and with far less complications and risks. “The reduction in visceral fat is particularly important,” said lead researcher and head of the BWH Department of Sugery Dr. Preferentially lost visceral fat after vagal de-afferentation highlights the potential for this procedure.” The way in which caspaicin works has to do with how it affects the nerve fibers in the body responsible for sending certain signals to the brain.
