Diet Pills and Heart Problems - Medsafe Home Page

Have you ever taken the diet pills Ponderax or Adifax? Ponderax and Adifax are diet pills that work by reducing the appetite. If you have taken diet pills and you are not sure whether they were Ponderax or Adifax, your pharmacist or doctor may be able to help. There are a number of other diet pills available in New Zealand, but only Ponderax and Adifax have been associated with heart valve problems. From the limited information available, it appears that patients treated with Ponderax or Adifax for less than three months are not at any greater risk of heart valve abnormalities. You do not need to see your doctor if you took Ponderax or Adifax for less than 3 months, or if you took other diet pills. If you are concerned, talk with your doctor at your next visit and ask for your heart to be examined. If you have taken Ponderax or Adifax for 3 months or more, you will need to see your doctor to discuss the risks and for a heart examination. The doctor will examine you for signs of heart problems. If you have been examined and your doctor has found no evidence of a heart murmur or valve damage, you are at no higher risk of valve damage from infection than any other person. If you need dental or other surgery and have not yet seen your doctor for a heart check, you will need to tell your dentist or surgeon that you took these diet pills.

HCG diet : Is it safe and effective? - Mayo Clinic

In fact, the Food and Drug Administration has advised consumers to steer clear of over-the-counter weight-loss products that contain HCG. HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone produced during pregnancy. HCG is not approved for over-the-counter use, nor has it been proved to work for weight loss. Companies that sell over-the-counter HCG weight-loss products are breaking the law. So why has there been so much talk about the HCG diet? Perhaps it's because the diet recommends severe calorie restriction — typically just 500 to 800 calories a day. People who follow such a very low calorie diet are likely to lose weight, at least in the short term. Side effects have also been reported with the HCG diet and include fatigue, irritability, restlessness, depression, fluid buildup (edema), and swelling of the breasts in boys and men (gynecomastia). Talk with your doctor or other health care provider about how to make healthy changes that lead to permanent weight loss, such as eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise. HCG diet products are illegal. HCG diet. Human chorionic gonadotropin is of no value in the management of obesity. Effect of the human chorionic gonadotropin diet on patient outcomes.

Diet Pill for Diabetics Causes Healthy Weight Loss

Weight loss plays an important role in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. This week, researchers announce in a free online journal article published in the journal Obesity that the diet pill lorcaserin has demonstrated significant weight loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Lorcaserin is a serotonin receptor angonist that works specifically on appetite signals in the brain and has been shown in previous studies—with otherwise healthy obese individuals—to cause significant weight loss. Encouraged by the previous weight loss findings with lorcaserin, researchers from a variety of academic institutions and members of The Obesity Society (TOS), worked together to determine whether or not lorcaserin is safe and effective in the treatment of overweight patients with Type 2 diabetes. Metformin is an anti-diabetes drug that lowers blood sugar levels, and has been found to cause slight weight loss. All participants also engaged in a lifestyle modification weight loss program during the study. After one year, the researchers found that patients with Type 2 diabetes who took either the 10 milligrams of lorcasein twice a day or 10 milligrams of lorcasein just once a day, achieved a weight loss of 5.5% of their starting body weight in comparison to the placebo group that lost on average of only 1.5% of their starting body weight. The authors acknowledge that their study design has some limitations in that it only evaluated the effects of lorcasein on Type 2 diabetes patients whose diabetes is currently treated with oral agents that included metformin and/or SFU and that it remains to be tested whether the healthy weight loss results they observed with the diabetic diet pill lorcasein will also include a broader diabetic population.

Is Taking Diet Pills and Getting a Tummy

Anesthesia Risks and Phentermine / Diet Pills. That is NOT the case with elective (IE you and your doctor CHOOSE WHEN to to have your) surgery and especially with Cosmetic surgery in which you choose to have a surgery to improve your appearance at a time of your choosing. With cosmetic surgery, we try as much as possible to pick up and minimize risk factors. Phentermine has been known to drop your blood pressure during surgery and many of my anesthesia colleagues prefer you were not on it. Personally, rather than worry about which ingredeient is in each one of your bottles, I think it it would be far safer for you to stop taking all such additives and unnecessary medications before surgery. The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) is aware of and concerned about reports that some patients taking the diet drug nicknamed "Phen" and not disclosing this to their anesthesiologists prior to surgery, are experiencing adverse and potentially deadly reactions while under general anesthesia. Monitoring the patient's vita' signs is one of the important functions that anesthesiologists do during surgery, and several ASA members recoil that some patients who were taking phentermine have become hypotensive (with abnormally low blood pressure) while under general anesthesia. Phentermine and Surgery do NOT mix! As explained by my colleagues, elective surgery, because it IS elective, should occur under the most ideal circumstances possible, in order to absolutely minimize any and all risks. After all, you do not have a terrible disease that will progress if your surgery does not happen right away. Tummy tuck and diet pills. It is definitely not safe taking any diet pill and having surgery. One dieting before any surgery has been shown to slow your healing and even increase your rate of complications. In my practice, all my tummy tuck patients are given additional nutritional supplement before, during and after surgery to optimize their healing. This can increase your blood pressure and heart rate during the surgery.

Pills Just As Good As Stents For Stable Heart Patients

Stents, made by companies such as Boston Scientific Corp , Abbott Laboratories and Medtronic Inc, are still the preferred treatment for opening up blocked heart arteries in patients rushed to the hospital with an acute heart attack. But several studies have shown the heart devices are no better than drugs in patients with stable heart disease, in which heart arteries have narrowed and may be causing chest pain. For the latest so-called meta-analysis, the team pooled data only from newer studies that compared drug treatments with stents - a wire-mesh tube used to prop open the artery and prevent it from reclosing. "The question was is there any benefit to stenting the blockages in these patients as an initial therapy procedure over treating them with optimal medical therapy and referring them to get a stent if necessary," Brown said in a telephone interview. The analysis included results on more than 7,200 patients enrolled in eight studies between 1997 and 2005 comparing stents with medical therapy in stable heart patients with narrowed sections in their heart arteries. "The result showed quite clearly there was no benefit of stenting as far as reducing death, heart attack, repeat procedures and even reducing symptomatic angina (chest pain)," Brown said. Theodore Bass, vice president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, a group of heart doctors that specialize in stenting procedures. Bass said in an email that the study "misses the mark" on the quality-of-life concerns for patients and that stenting procedures helped relieve chest pain, or angina, in stable patients. Boden is the lead author of a large study called COURAGE published in 2007 in the New England Journal of Medicine that was one of the first to challenge the value of stents and angioplasty over drug treatment. Boden and Brown attribute the changes to improvements in medications, and given that most of them are generic, getting more doctors to choose drugs first could save a lot in health costs. "In the context of controlling rising health care costs in the United States, this study suggests that up to 76 percent of patients with stable coronary artery disease could avoid percutaneous coronary intervention (such as stenting) altogether if treated with optimal medical therapy," Brown and Stergiopoulous wrote. Brown said part of the reason doctors ignored those studies was that there was a big financial incentive to use stents versus drugs. The hospital submits another bill for using the hospital, the stent, the equipment and nursing time," he said.

Reduce the Salt in Your Diet. Your taste buds will change soon, and you will not miss the salt. Reduce the salt content in your diet by trying the following suggestions: Check the nutrition facts on the label for sodium content per serving. If salt or sodium is listed in the first five ingredients, it is too high in sodium. Remove the salt shaker from the kitchen counter and table. Instead of adding salt, spark up the flavor with herbs and spices, garlic, onions and citrus juices. Skip the urge to add salt to cooking water for pasta, rice, cereal and vegetables. Ask for a lemon wedge or bring your own herb blend to enhance the food's flavor. Or ask for sauces and salad dressings on the side since they are often high in sodium. Instead of seasoning your food with salt, enhance the flavor of food with these salt-free herb and spice combinations. Heart patients shouldn't use diet pill, FDA says

WASHINGTON  — Federal health regulators on Thursday added new warnings to weight loss pill Meridia about the increased risk of heart attack and stroke in patients with a history of heart problems. The FDA's new label states only that the drug should not be used in patients with heart failure, hypertension, irregular heart beats and other problems. In a statement posted online, the FDA urged patients to talk to their doctors about whether they should continue taking the drug. "Health care professionals should regularly monitor the blood pressure and heart rate of patients using," Meridia, the FDA stated. The company, based in North Chiacgo, previously stressed that the drug is only approved for patients with no previous history of heart disease. Consumer advocacy group Public Citizen petitioned the FDA to pull Meridia off the market late last year, based on new data about heart risks. The group's health care specialist, Dr. Sidney Wolfe, blasted the FDA on Thursday for not taking a harder line against the drug. Regulators previously rejected a 2002 petition from Public Citizen to withdraw Meridia, saying they wanted to wait for the findings of a 10,000-patient study. Patients in the study were older than 55 and overweight with a history of heart disease or diabetes. The drug was prescribed to about quarter million patients in the U.

Contrave : Is New Diet Pill Right For You

Called Contrave, the latest drug can be used by obese and overweight adults who have at least one other obesity-related condition, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes. According to the FDA, it is only effective when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle  —  including a nutritious low-calorie diet and exercise — and is only to be prescribed as part of an overall weight-loss plan. D., says the new medicine holds great promise for people who combine its use with regular exercise and a reduced-calorie diet. Notes Contrave was first recommended for approval by an FDA advisory panel in 2011, but the agency rejected it at the time. Gulfo argues the FDA should have approved the drug years ago, when it had all the evidence it needed that the medication is not only effective, but also safe. And that’s what it’s really all about: [the need to] get drugs that are safe and effective in the hands of the doctors.” The FDA approved Contrave for people unable to lose weight through diet and exercise alone who aren’t ready for weight-loss surgery. And the FDA has approved two other weight-loss drugs in just the past two years — Qsymia and Belviq. But it is not for everyone, and — like past diet pills — Contrave can cause risky side effects. It can also increase blood pressure, and should not be used in people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, according to the FDA. In addition, Contrave increases the risk for seizures, and should not be used by those with seizure disorders. “[But] for the right patient who’s exercising and watching their diet, it’s great.”

Heart Problems Caused by Diet Pills

By now, most women have heard of some heart problems caused by diet pills, especially the regimen called fen-phen (fenfluramine Pondimin® and phentermine Fastin®, Adipex P ®). These medications have been around as appetite supressants for a long time; phentermine was approved for use in the U. Several recent articles in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at how common these heart valve lesions are in their ongoing studies. For various reasons they all came out with different estimates of how common the heart- valve problem is. They all found, however, an increase in heart valve regurgitation in men and women taking the diet medications for 4 months or longer. There had previously been a question that perhaps obesity alone was associated with these heart problems, but all the studies confirmed that incidence of valve regurgitation was higher than in same size obese patients who did not take the appetite suppressants. For the most part, those valve changes are not symptomatic enough to end up in diagnoses on physician's charts. The incidence of clinically recognizable heart-valve disease after use of appetite suppressants for 3 or less months or even for 4 or more months was low after 4 years of follow-up (less than 1 per 1000). Higher doses and longer use of these appetite suppressants is associated with heart valve regurgitation. All women (and men) who received fenfluramine or dexfenfluramine should have clinical exams by their primary care physician with special attention to the cardiac exam. In view of the delay in recognizing the association between appetite suppressant use and cardiac valve abnormalities, caution should be used in the long term use of other agents that act on serotonergic mechanisms even though they might be by different pathways. A good source for information about the different heart valves and their diseases can be found at: Heart valve guide at American Heart Association.

Fenfluramine/phentermine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The drug combination fenfluramine/phentermine, usually called fen-phen, was an anti- obesity treatment that utilized two anorectics . [4] It sold modestly until the 1990s, when it was combined with phentermine and heavily marketed. The FDA subsequently received over a hundred additional reports of valvular heart disease in patients taking fen-phen, fenfluramine alone or dexfenfluramine alone. [7] The FDA requested that the manufacturers of fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine stress the potential risk to the heart in the drugs' labeling and in patient package inserts. As of 1997, the FDA was continuing to receive reports of valvular heart disease in persons who had taken these drugs. After reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, primarily in women who had been undergoing treatment with fen-phen or (dex)fenfluramine, the FDA requested its withdrawal from the market in September 1997. The action was based on findings from doctors who had evaluated patients taking these two drugs with echocardiograms , a procedure that can test the functioning of heart valves. In 1984, researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center reported that they had performed a double-blind, controlled clinical trial comparing phentermine alone, fenfluramine alone, a combination of phentermine and fenfluramine, and placebo, for weight loss in humans. Weight loss in those receiving the fen-phen combination was significantly greater (8.4±1.1 kg) than in those receiving placebo (4.4±0.9 kg) and equivalent to that of those receiving fenfluramine (7.5±1.2 kg) or phentermine alone (10.0±1.2 kg). The authors felt that combining fenfluramine and phentermine capitalized on their pharmacodynamic differences, resulting in equivalent weight loss, fewer adverse effects, and better appetite control. The term fen-phen was coined in 1994 when Pietr Hitzig and Richard B. The authors suggested that other combined dopamine and serotonin agonists or precursors might share this therapeutic potential. [13] [14] In 2006 it was confirmed that the combination of phentermine and the serotonin precursor 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), in place of fenfluramine, significantly decreased alcohol withdrawal seizures in rats. The findings on fen-phen, specifically fenfluramine, causing valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension prompted a renewed interest in the deleterious effects of systemic serotonin. It had already been known for decades that two of the major side-effects of the carcinoid syndrome , in which excessive serotonin is produced endogenously, are valvular disease and pulmonary hypertension.

Why isn't there a safe weight - loss pill

Drugs have not effectively answered the problem, despite billions of dollars spent in research. "We might not have any magic bullet," for obesity said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of the Health Research Group - part of the nonprofit consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen - isn't hopeful about the development of an effective and safe weight-loss drug. "The possibility that the drug will only do the good things like lose weight and not have myriad effects on the body - is zero," he said. Food and Drug Administration to ban the only approved long-term weight-loss drug, orlistat. The group said that orlistat, sold in prescription form as Xenical and over-the-counter as Alli, causes serious side effects such as liver injury and kidney failure. The company said the efficacy and safety of the drug "is based on more than 10 years of clinical experience and more than 38.7 million patients worldwide have received Xenical." Last year, the FDA rejected three proposed weight-loss drugs , Qnexa , lorcaserin and Contrave because of safety concerns ranging from heart to psychiatric issues. He was not involved in the rulings regarding the three weight-loss drugs. While lifestyle, diet and exercise matter, our biological wiring combined with the modern environment make it difficult, researchers said. "A lot of people say the reason for obesity is because of personal responsibility," said Wang, a senior scientist. "The global obesity epidemic is due to food being widely available," Gold said. "The food has evolved, but our brains haven't really changed from the time that we had to hunt and grow our own food."

Heart - healthy diet - University of Maryland Medical Center

In 2011, the American Heart (AHA) emphasized in a scientific statement that diet and lifestyle changes are essential for patients with high triglyceride levels. Triglycerides are blood fats associated with unhealthy cholesterol levels and increased risk for heart disease. Reducing salt can lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease and heart failure. Excessive cholesterol in the blood contributes to atherosclerosis and subsequent heart disease. The recommended daily intake of dietary fiber for heart protection is at least 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men ages 19 to 50. Consuming whole grains on a regular basis may lower the risk for heart disease and heart failure, improve factors involved with diabetes, and lower the risk for type 2 diabetes. The best sources of protein are fish, poultry, and soy. (Plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, do not contain cholesterol.) The American Heart Association recommends no more than 300 mg of dietary cholesterol per day for the general population and no more than 200 mg daily for those with high cholesterol or heart disease. Deficiencies in the B vitamins folate (known also as folic acid), B 6, and B 12 have been associated with a higher risk for heart disease in some studies. Although both black and green tea contain caffeine, they are safe for the heart. The Atkins diet restricts complex carbohydrates in vegetables and, particularly, fruits that are known to protect against heart disease. The main staple on the Sacred Heart Diet is a broth-based soup. The diet details a strict seven-day plan that you must follow precisely. On the first day of the diet, you may consume soup and fruit only. The second day allows the soup, vegetables and one baked potato. On the third day, you can eat all of the soup, fruit and vegetables that you want and the fourth day allows soup, at least three bananas and skim milk. The last day of the plan allows soup, brown rice, vegetables and unsweetened fruit juice.

Diet drug may cause heart problems, FDA says

WASHINGTON  — Scientists for the Food and Drug Administration said Friday a pill to treat obesity from Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. The FDA's review, posted online Friday, also raised questions about the pill's effects on the heart, a perennial issue for weight loss drugs that have been plagued by safety issues. Orexigen's pill Contrave is the third weight loss pill to be reviewed by the FDA this year. FDA officials have acknowledged the need for new weight loss drugs amid an epidemic of U. The FDA said Friday four studies conducted by Orexigen showed patients taking its drug lost, on average, 4.2 percent more weight than patients taking a placebo. However, the results did not meet an FDA guideline that there should be at least a 5 percent difference in weight loss between the groups. The drug did meet a second measure of effectiveness involving the number of patients who lost at least 5 percent or more of their weight. The FDA will ask a panel of experts to vote on the drug's efficacy and safety on Tuesday. But the search for a drug that helps patients safely shed pounds has been largely unsuccessful. Earlier this year Abbott Laboratories' Meridia weight loss pill was pulled from the market after regulators said it increased the risk of heart attack and stroke. In reviewing Contrave, FDA scientists complained that the company enrolled few elderly patients or patients with a history of heart disease in its trials, making it difficult to determine the drug's safety in patients at risk for heart attack and stroke. FDA reported higher rates of side effects already linked to the drugs, including high blood pressure, dizziness and insomnia. The quest for a blockbuster weight loss drug has been plagued for decades by safety issues. But in October the FDA rejected two drugs in one week: Qnexa from Vivus Inc.
