Rapid weight loss concerns

Weight - control behaviour and weight - concerns in young

In general, athletes do not seem to be at a higher risk for pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour. Summarizing these data, larger studies in particular seem to suggest that young elite athletes are not more at risk for pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour than non-athletic controls. For all weight concerns and weight-control behaviours, no difference could be found between the various types of sports. 11.1% of the female and 2.1% of the male athletes used pathogenic weight-control methods. Other studies examined only selected sports types [ 31 , 45 ] describing the prevalence of weight concerns and weight-control behaviour in a particular field. The majority of athletes did not score pathologically for weight concerns and weigh-control behaviour. The majority of studies included in this review did find a higher frequency of pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour in female athletes than in male ones. The form of pathogenic weight-control behaviour is different in male and female athletes. Furthermore, the next difficult distinction is the thin line between pathogenic weight-control behaviour and eating disorders in elite sports. Taken together, the examined papers show that there is some prevalence of pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour in elite athletes. Sundgot-Borgen J: Risk and trigger factors for the development of eating disorders in female elite athletes. Sundgot-Borgen J, Garthe I: Elite athletes in aesthetic and Olympic weight-class sports and the challenge of body weight and body compositions.

Causes Of Rapid Weight Gain - Reasons For Rapid Weight

Causes Of Rapid Weight Gain. Actually deficiency of thyroid hormone can reduce metabolism of food, resulting in loss of appetite and modest weight gain. Weight gain occurs owing to fat accumulation and fluid retention caused by protein deposits in the body. After hours later, symptoms like bloating and swelling in the hands, feet, ankles, abdomen, chin and around the eyes, can appear. Much of the weight gained is fluid retention, which occurs due to inflammation and the release of certain hormones. Besides, fermentation of foods, especially carbohydrates, in the intestines can result in a swollen belly and gas production. Steroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antidepressants and diabetic medications are some other drugs that can cause weight gain. Sources of stress may not be always evident, but may still influence eating habits and cause weight gain. Note: Organ enlargement, like an ovarian cyst, and obstruction of lymph fluid, can also lead to weight gain.

Bariatric Surgery : Postoperative Concerns

The fact is these foods will interfere with long-term weight loss and should not be eaten anyway. If they can be identified, there are other “trigger” type foods that may induce diarrhea, and the patient should attempt to avoid or minimize these foods. This may decrease the frequency of diarrhea and the severity of gas. The adjustable band (LAGB) can be tightened according to the patient’s appetite and feeling of satiety with small portions. The mixing of bile and pancreatic enzymes with food after this type of surgery occurs in only 10% of the most distal small intestine. Iron is best absorbed in the elemental form as well, and should not be taken with the calcium since they compete for absorption. Following weight loss surgery, patients may lose weight fairly rapidly at first, and then as time passes the weight loss becomes more gradual. This same weight loss trend may be seen after LAGB, however the weight loss will be more gradual and steady, averaging 5-10 lbs per month, but continuing for up to 3 years. Plateaus may occur if the band is not appropriately tightened, and therefore if this happens, the patient should consult with their surgeon for a possibly band adjustment. Expecting these fluctuations in weight loss to occur can avert patient depression or exasperation with the surgery. Exercise after surgery is absolutely imperative, and it may be the most important factor that can help a patient achieve long-standing and successful weight loss.

Rapid Weight Loss in Teenagers Causes Medical Complications

The obesity epidemic has delivered to physicians a growing group of adolescents who have lost large amounts of weight and are not yet underweight, but who are medically unstable. Adolescents with EDNOS-Wt do not meet the diagnostic criteria for AN because they are not underweight. Nevertheless, they experience the life-threatening complications of weight loss seen in patients with AN. The maximum premorbid weight was not routinely sought during the study period, and the authors note that reported weights may not be reliable. These adolescents required hospital admission because of acute medical complications of weight loss, despite not meeting the low weight criteria. We also found that inpatients who had EDNOS-Wt experienced a similar profile of life-threatening complications as adolescents who had AN, including early refeeding syndrome," the authors write. In 2010, Peebles and colleagues first described medical complications from weight loss in adolescents who did not meet diagnostic criteria for AN. The authors of the current study explain that clinicians should carefully assess adolescents of higher weight if they have experienced extensive weight loss. "In our study there was a similar amount and duration of weight loss in the 2 groups, despite the fact that 1 group was underweight and the other was not. Given this, it may be that the clinical features we observed in AN and EDNOS-Wt patients are less attributable to underweight and more a physiologic response to extreme weight loss over a short period, which was apparent in both groups," they explain. Physicians often miss the physiological changes, in particular the life-threatening cardiovascular complications associated with weight loss.

Causes of Rapid Weight Loss in Older Cats

Causes of Rapid Weight Loss in Older Cats. As your kitty ages she can develop a variety of health issues, some of which can cause rapid weight loss. Rapid weight loss can lead to other, potentially fatal conditions, so it's important you bring your furbaby in for a check with her veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Without regular veterinary dental cleanings, this buildup can lead to the inflammation and infection of your cat's gums. This condition results from the buildup of fat in the cat's liver, leading to more serious symptoms like rapid weight loss, which can be fatal. Both the dental disease and the hepatic lipidosis require treatment by a veterinarian to prevent continuing problems with eating and weight loss. This disease results from an overproduction of the hormone that controls your cat's metabolism. Older cats, especially obese older kitties, can develop type 2 diabetes, a condition that can lead to rapid weight loss. Some older cats fail to eat when they can't get to their food, leading to hepatic lipidosis and weight loss. Some older cats have a reduced sense of smell, which can cause them to stop eating; heating the food helps your kitty smell it and may tempt her to eat it. Always consult with your veterinarian at the first signs of weight loss in your elderly cat.

The Pros and Cons Associated with Rapid Weight Loss

It is at this point when many individuals lose motivation and quit their weight loss program. Losing lean muscle tissue is unhealthy and highly inappropriate for any weight loss program where the weight loss is not being driven by a more serious medical condition. Combine a Dietary Regime with an Exercise Routine: Combining a dietary intake routine with an exercise regime that you regularly perform to weight loss is the single most effective and safe way to lose weight. This simple weight loss program would achieve the 1,000-calorie deficit, improve your health and fitness, and represent an approach that could be sustained over the time. Consume Nutritious, Well-Balanced, Whole Foods: Many individuals that approach their weight loss program through consuming nutritious, calorie-conscious whole foods find that they can actually consume more food and still achieve a caloric deficit. An alternative approach would be to define a weight loss program that is healthy, sustainable, and creates a lifestyle that you can embark upon for the rest of your life. Most physicians can discuss several of the approaches that are not appropriate as well, hence improving your focus and weight loss results. By doing so, you will be able to determine whether you're on schedule to achieve your weight loss goals within your specified timeframe, whether your weight loss goals are achievable, and whether there are any modifications that are required to obtain your weight loss goals within the specific timeframe. In this case, the frustration may simply be due to the fact that their weight loss goals are unrealistic. However, many individuals participate solely in a dietary program, achieve their weight loss goals, return to their "old" lifestyle, and simply regain the weight. Over time, many of these individuals find themselves in a continual cycle of entering a dietary program, achieving their weight loss goals, and exiting the program.

My Story / Rapid Weight Loss / Concerns

Before that it was a little slower, but I cheated a bit and didn't have the methodical system in place I have now. I have been ill for the last couple of years and gained a lot of weight. I am 40 years old, male, and in good health (now) except for the weight I have to lose. What actually are the dangers and how to you keep alert for them? Thanks for the support and concern. Thank you for the encouragement and acknowledgement. I was away for a bit, and when I came back this week I just bulldozed all my profile info because all the weight and fitness stuff was out of date. I now think I can be below 250 when I go on that trip, and be at a good healthy weight in the Spring. The most I lost in a week was 6, and looks quite possible that could happen again this week. I am in and out of the gym in an hour.

Unexplained Weight Loss

If you suddenly begin to lose weight and you're not sure why, it may be the sign of an underlying health condition that may have developed. It can also be a signal that something about the way that you eat and exercise is not promoting a healthy body stasis. Only by recognizing that you've had unexplained weight loss will you then be able to examine the reasons why this is happening. One of the major reasons for unexplained weight loss is a stomach virus or disease that you may not otherwise be aware of. When you see that you've lost weight, consider whether you've felt sick at all and whether you might have a condition of this type. When this happens, you'll not be able to absorb those nutrients for yourself, and you'll consequently lose weight and begin to be malnourished, even when you're eating the same amount of food that you usually do. If you've been exercising more frequently than normal, you may have burned more calories than you're used to, and the result is that you may begin to lose weight. If you continue this pattern, you'll continue to lose weight and may even have some difficulty putting it back on. If you're concerned about your unexplained weight loss, consult with a doctor or a nutritionist for more information.

Exercise Smart for Rapid Weight Loss - Dr. David Williams

Exercise Smart for Rapid Weight Loss. Learn which types of exercise will help you meet and exceed your weight loss goals. Exercise burns calories and fat, increases lean body tissue, and raises your metabolic rate. Aerobic exercise gets you breathing harder, increases your pulse rate, and helps you burn calories and fat. However, if you want to supercharge your aerobic activity for rapid weight loss and maximum fat loss, use interval training. With interval training, you transition back and forth from an aerobic state to an anaerobic state—and that requires your body to burn more fat for fuel. In other words, even after you stop exercising, your body continues to burn fat, leading to more rapid weight loss. Aerobic exercise burns a certain amount of calories and fat while you’re doing it, but to keep burning calories and fat for hours afterward, you must combine weight-bearing or resistance exercise into your routine. You can do weight-bearing and resistance exercises in the comfort of your own home by doing pushups, squats, and other similar exercises . You can even incorporate exercise into your daily routine so that you’re burning extra calories and losing weight without breaking a huge sweat.

Dieting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some people follow a diet to gain weight (usually in the form of muscle ). A study published in American Psychologist found that short-term dieting involving "severe restriction of calorie intake" does not lead to "sustained improvements in weight and health for the majority of individuals". [4] Other studies have found that the average individual maintains some weight loss after dieting. Low-fat diets involve the reduction of the percentage of fat in one's diet. Some of the most commonly used low-calorie diets include DASH diet and Weight Watchers . A comparison of Atkins, Zone diet , Ornish diet, and LEARN diet in premenopausal women found the greatest benefit from the Atkins diet . Diets 2 and 3 lost the most weight and fat mass; however, low density lipoprotein fell in Diet 2 and rose in Diet 3. A meta-analysis by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that low glycemic index or low glycemic load diets led to more weight loss and better lipid profiles.

In order for weight loss to be permanent, changes in diet and lifestyle must be permanent as well.

Risks of rapid weight loss - Fast weight loss dangers

Do you know what the risks of fast weight loss diets are? Have you be warned about what could happen when you follow a severe diet plan to get rapid weight loss? Risks of rapid weight loss and severe diets: Gout is very painful and if you have suffered in the past, then speak with your doctor about what you can do to reduce the risk of ‘attack’. The majority of rapid weight loss diets are very low in carbohydrate content. If your rapid weight loss plan lacks breads, grains, fruits and starchy vegetables then you’re at risk of losing energy. If you have diabetes and take tablets or inject insulin to control it then you must speak with a doctor or diabetes educator before you start a rapid weight loss plan. If your blood pressure is ‘good’ because you are taking anti-hypertensive drugs to control it then you need to speak with your doctor before starting any severe weight loss plan. Continue to see your doctor when you ‘come off’ the fast weight loss plan for medical and health checks. But in the longer-term, you will regain flesh/fat weight if you go back to old habits and haven’t worked on a good eating plan to suit your lifestyle to prevent regain. You and your body simply can’t keep up the pace. You might drop a dress size or two in time for a wedding or special event but typically after the special day, you relax the diet plan and the weight is regained. By tackling your weight loss this way, you will find an eating plan that suits your style. As always, speak with your medical doctor before starting any weight loss plan.

For this reason, most doctors can assure their weight-loss surgery patients that with time and patience, and keeping up good nutritional intake, their hair will grow back. Iron is the single nutrient most highly correlated with hair loss. Zinc deficiency has been tied to hair loss in both animal studies and human cases. There is data linking zinc deficiency in humans to both telogen effluvium and immune-mediated hair loss. The study administered 200 mg of zinc sulfate (45mg elemental zinc) three times daily to post-operative patients with hair loss. Researchers found that in patients taking the zinc, 100 percent had cessation of hair loss after six months. In five patients, hair loss resumed after zinc was stopped, and was arrested again with renewed supplementation. Thus we cannot say that zinc would prevent hair loss after weight-loss surgery, and further study would definitely be needed to make this connection. Hair loss can be distressing to bariatric surgery patients and many will try nutrition themselves to see if they can prevent it. Unfortunately, there is little evidence that early hair loss is preventable because it is mostly likely caused by surgery and rapid weight-loss.

Rapid weight loss concerns competitors

Gill was listed at 174 pounds as a football player for the Wildcats last fall and his wrestling season was delayed until he could lose weight in order to compete at 140 pounds. The idea now is to be at their weight at the beginning (of the season)." Reese was trying to get down to the 150-pound weight class and had lost a reported 17 pounds in three days. At the heavier weights, football and wrestling have some shared benefits, but most of the weight classes would be considered small for football players. In 2002, Hackett won a Division II state wrestling championship at 171 pounds after he helped the football team make the playoffs. He ended the football season at 205 pounds and needed until January to lose the weight. Hackett also said finding the proper weight class is important. The need for some to lose weight had some like Pickerington Central coach Jason Allen calling for a later start to the wrestling season. Perhaps no school in the area deals with the dichotomy of football and wrestling conditioning like Hilliard Davidson. In wrestling, Davidson won the Division I district championship last season and was chosen to represent the Central District at the state duals on Jan. Because he played football at a lighter weight, Delande was able to join the wrestling team for the opener on Dec. Mickley was listed at 170 pounds on the football roster and is wrestling at 152. Last week was tough, but this week the weight really started dropping."

Rapid, drastic weight loss is cause for concern, not

Rapid, drastic weight loss is cause for concern, not celebration. I have been thinking a lot about the way that people automatically encourage weight loss in others. Because rapid, drastic* weight loss is not a healthy thing for people to be trying to deliberately inflict on their bodies, and society needs to stop overtly and tacitly encouraging it. Rapid, drastic weight loss is a sign of a number of possibilities. No, I will not use a word so benign as “dieting” or “lifestyle changes.”  If a person is restricting their calories to such an extent that they experience rapid, drastic weight loss they are also malnourishing their body. So why are we so quick to congratulate every weight loss that we see? Why do we explicitly encourage this behavior in everyone from loved ones to coworkers to that lady we always see at the library when there is no circumstance in which drastic and rapid weight loss represents health in adults?* Because make no mistake: in adults, rapid weight loss is always a sign of the body experiencing illness of some kind. No, I do not think that someone trying intentional weight loss should be lectured about the risks (educated, if he or she asks, sure, but not lectured). What I am calling us to is to stop immediately seeing health and willpower and unicorns and rainbows when we see rapid weight loss in someone else. * This post is not about people who are trying to lose weight “the healthy way” by losing slowly over time.

Weight - control behaviour and weight - concerns in young

In general, athletes do not seem to be at a higher risk for pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour. The terms weight-control, weight-control behaviour, weight gain, weight loss, pathogenic weight-control behaviour and weight-concerns were each combined with elite athlete, young elite athlete, adolescent elite athlete and elite sports. One study came partly to the conclusion that athletes are more at risk for weight concerns but not weight-control behaviour [ 32 ]: Ferrand et al. Summarizing these data, larger studies in particular seem to suggest that young elite athletes are not more at risk for pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour than non-athletic controls. 11.1% of the female and 2.1% of the male athletes used pathogenic weight-control methods. In total, only two studies made a clear statement about gender with contradictory results: whereas one study showed no difference between female and male athletes [ 4 ], the other one clearly supported the theory that female athletes are more engaged in pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour [ 13 ]. Taken together, the examined papers show that there is some prevalence of pathogenic weight concerns and weight-control behaviour in elite athletes.
