Operation to remove excess skin after weight loss

How To Deal With Loose Skin After an

This is an issue that  Kelly Coffey , a personal trainer who lost 160 pounds, has personal experience with: She was shocked at both the appearance of her now-trim body and how she felt about it when she first lost the weight. How loose your skin gets after losing weight depends on several factors: how much weight you've lost, how old you were when you lost the weight, how many times you've lost and gained the weight back, and how quickly you lost it (the faster you lose it, the less time your skin has to tighten naturally). It made her stronger and helped her appreciate the abilities of her body. "It’s hard to have a problem with a body that's capable of taking on the challenges you put it through," she says. And at the end of the day, your body doesn't have to be the spitting image of a celeb's to be healthy—and look amazing. When you have a negative thought about the way your post-weight loss body looks, Coffey recommends doing a "caring action" like talking with a loved one on the phone, going on a walk outside, or meditating . "When you answer those negative thoughts with caring actions, the care starts to beat out that negative mentality." Buy Clothes that Fit Your New Body. Finding your own style by shopping for clothes that suit your body type helps you accept your new body and take pride in how you present yourself to the world, says Coffey. Spending time with your significant other, family, and friends who recognize all the hard work you put into your weight-loss journey will help reinforce all of the amazing progress you've made, says Coffey. This is especially helpful when you aren't able to see for yourself how amazing your new body is.

RNY on 11/06/07. I do not know if this is true, but I plan to look into it tomorrow. She told me that The SHRINERS HOSPITAL for Children will do the skin removal for free as long as they can have the skin donated to them for their burn victims, for skin grafts. I DO NOT KNOW IF IT IS TRUE. It would be great if it were true not only for WLS patients , but for the children that have been burn victims, who need the grafts. If I find out a definate, I will post again on the subject. That is why I stressed in my post that I was not sure if it was true or not. They took care of her free for 14 years ! I thank god everyday for them and what they did for her. Even if I find they can not do the surgery, I still will see if they can accept the skin as a donation.

Weight Loss Plastic Surgery, Excess skin, Lower Body Lift

“I lost 10 stone through sheer determination and wasn’t going to let excess skin get in the way” As his weight escalated, Richard began to suffer from painful knee joints, indigestion and heartburn. He visited his GP for advice and was recommended Orlistat, a slimming tablet that limits the body’s ability to absorb fat. Richard was losing about a stone a month, and after the first year, had lost 7.5 stone. After two years, Richard had lost over 10 stone and was able to buy off-the-peg clothes, instead of having all his trousers tailored at huge expense. He found that having lost a lot of weight, his skin was beginning to sag around his arms, chest, tummy and thigh areas. After researching cosmetic surgery and the surgeon’s reputation on the internet, Richard also spoke to a friend’s mother, who had undergone a tummy tuck with Mr Offer. Mr Offer discussed surgical options and recommended a lower body lift procedure in the first instance, in order to remove the excess skin around his tummy and buttock areas. Impressed by his professional approach and the helpful way Mr Offer answered all his questions, Richard immediately felt more confident. Richard discussed it at length with his girlfriend and family and decided to have the recommended surgery. “Given that Richard had dropped 16 inches around the waist, the procedure not only helped to remove the surplus skin from his tummy and buttock areas, it pulled the chest down, making a further gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) operation easier to perform.” Within a month, Richard returned to work and after 2 months, his scar had faded until it was barely visible. Pleased with the result, Richard returned 6 months later to have his second operation. After a consultation with Mr Offer, he wasn’t keen on the vertical anchor type scarring that can result from a standard gynaecomastia procedure and asked if there was another option. Despite having to remortgage his house to pay for both of the operations, a total cost of £15,000, Richard is delighted with the results and believes the cost was worth it.

After Huge Weight Loss, Sagging Skin

The body may be lighter, but it’s now weighed down with folds of sagging skin, causing a wild amount of emotional and physical (think: chafing) pain. More extreme weight-loss patients are choosing to remove the loose skin through cosmetic surgery, and a recent study showed that the bodies and minds of those who do end up faring much better. Franklin Santana, a 29-year-old who lives in the Bronx, had gastric bypass surgery in October 2011, and before the surgery, he weighed 395 pounds. And then, at the end of October, it’s all sad and saggy and deflated. Fantana had done his research before getting the surgery done, and he knew that he’d probably be saddled with “loose skin” after it was over. "I was not really comfortable even looking at myself in the mirror, with all the excess flesh," said Olmstead, who lives in New York state and had cosmetic surgery in Manhattan, led by Wallach, to remove the sagging skin in 2004. It can happen when the weight is lost through diet and exercise, but it happens more often to weight-loss surgery patients. The most effective way to remove the excess skin is through cosmetic surgery, in one or more of an array of procedures known as body contouring. And those who do shed the extra skin generally fare better than those who don’t, both psychologically and physiologically. People who had weight-loss surgery, and subsequently had the excess skin removed, were less likely to gain weight back than those who had the surgery but did not undergo a body contouring procedure, according to a recent study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Those who did not have any cosmetic procedures to remove the resulting excess skin ended up gaining back about 50 pounds, but those who did have body contouring done only gained back about 13 pounds. After the body contouring is done, patients routinely lose another 10 to 15 pounds of loose skin alone. He had body contouring done this winter, and his insurance covered the procedure. Stopping the painful chafing is important, and such a relief, say people who’ve had body contouring done. Franklin and Maldonado both had body lifts done by Glasberg over the holidays.

These Photos Show The Problem With Excess

These Photos Show The Problem With Excess Skin After Extreme Weight Loss. It had been 21 months since her successful bariatric surgery, and while she had shed nearly half the weight of her 5-foot-11, 450-pound frame, her body was covered with loose skin. But for people like Bobbitt who lose an extreme amount of weight, the achievement can bring a new set of physical and psychological problems. "I couldn't see the weight loss anymore - just skin."I felt gross when I saw myself naked and when it came to dating, it was a big insecurity,” Bobbitt said. "I also lost motivation because I just couldn't see the weight loss anymore - just skin." But the statistics only represent roughly a quarter of the approximately 179,000 Americans who got bariatric surgery in 2013 and could conceivably have lost enough weight to warrant excess skin removal or contouring . Bobbitt's midsection after extreme weight loss, then three weeks and five months after her excess skin removal surgery. “It’s very problematic for patients - particularly the ones who have done the best and have lost the most weight and are the most physically active." Losing The Psychological Weight Of Excess Skin. In research literature, psychological distress over excess skin is clear, if understudied: One small 2014 study interviewed 11 women after their weight loss surgeries and found that none of their insurance policies would cover skin removal, though a majority described the excess skin as distressing and felt uncomfortable when naked. Like Bobbitt, they also faced constant fungal and bacterial infections that developed between the folds of their skin. After graduating from college in December 2014, something she says wouldn’t have been possible before her weight loss journey, Bobbitt married a man she met while in the midst of her skin operations. Bobbitt wishes that there were more financially viable options for people like her, but also hopes that the inevitability of excess skin doesn't deter anyone from trying to get to a healthy weight. At the same time, she acknowledges that the excess skin surgery changed her life for the better, almost on par with the weight loss surgery itself.

5 Ways to Fight Excess Skin After Your Bariatric Surgery

“The medical reason to remove the skin is to prevent rashes and discomfort from the extra skin chafing,” says plastic surgeon  Raymond Isakov, MD . “So, we usually recommend removing extra skin, as long as it’s going to be safe, reasonable and the patient is a good fit for the surgery.” The standard body contouring procedure for your belly is an abdominoplasty. The plastic surgeon removes the extra skin and tightens the muscles to make the entire stomach area look better and tighter. “In some of the patients who’ve had a significant amount of weight loss, we actually go all the way around their body in a procedure that we call a circumferential or belt lipectomy,” says Dr. Also known as a lower body lift, the procedure reshapes the patient’s abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. Both men and women may require breast surgery to remove extra skin hanging from the chest. “But they usually heal very well in time, and these patients don’t mind the trade-off.” A plastic surgeon can remove extra skin on your thighs, but it can be a more difficult procedure. Removing extra skin from your face is the phase of the body contouring process often left until last. Patients must take ample time off from work for the procedures and recovery. Body contouring procedures and coolsculpting™ are very different. “Post-bariatric body contouring is a more involved surgical procedure for our patients who need large amounts of skin surgically excised,” he says.

Weight Loss Surgery and Loose Skin

Weight Loss Surgery and Loose Skin. Weight loss surgery patients can have “loose” skin after dropping pounds. Plastic surgery can remove this skin and help provide the patient with the body they’ve waited for. But many have questions about when and how they can get this plastic surgery, and what kind of scars it can leave. Joseph Michaels, a surgeon with Belmont Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of Maryland and Virginia, explained that scarring is a guarantee, but after a weight loss operation, there is no set time for a plastic surgery to happen. “And what their ideal goals are is really what the plastic surgeon needs to listen to.” Weight loss surgery patients who lose large amounts of weight and produce excess skin can have that skin tightened, but should expect to trade one visual defect for another: scars. “We do try and put the scars in places where it’s minimally noticeable,” he said. And these are all options we all discuss with our patients at the time of the consultation.”

Body Contouring : Shedding Excess Skin after

After a person loses massive amounts of weight – 100 to 300 pounds – stretched, baggy skin usually hangs on the person’s body like a suit of overlarge clothes. The operation to take that skin off – body contouring – is becoming increasingly more popular, experts say, and completes the process started by the first operation. So she took a $20,000 second mortgage on her home to undergo a surgical operation known as body shaping to remove the excess skin. Also known alternatively as a “body lift” when skin all over the body is removed, the procedure is already one of the fastest growing areas of plastic surgery as more people give up on failed diets and exercise programs and opt for the gastric bypass operation made famous by NBC’s Al Roker and other notables. The gastric bypass patient is usually left with massive hanging skin running from the chin to the knees. The Pittsburg plastic surgeon who performed the six-hour operation on Maria Beal, taking off almost 20 pounds of skin. “The person should have lost at least 100 pounds, had a stable weight for 12 to 16 months after the gastric bypass operation, be in good health and not planning on becoming pregnant,” says Dr. “Plastic surgery for body contouring can have just as powerful an effect on the patient as did the weight loss following the gastric bypass.” The most common – and usually first –body shaping procedure after massive weight loss is often the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) which removes the apron of skin hanging from the stomach. The largest amount of loose skin hanging from a stomach was 65 pounds taken from a man who lost 300 pounds. However, the average woman’s skin loss is about seven to 15 pounds, says Dr. Yet others need a lower body lift, which includes removing and lifting the skin up from the knees to the crotch, almost like pulling up a pair of pants. Then, the patient will have difficulty bending forward and feel constrained until the skin stretches somewhat. Marsha says she still needs more body contouring to rid her arms of bat wings and the extra skin on her legs and buttocks. She keeps the extra skin under control, and out of sight, by wearing tights for skating and a tight wet suit for diving.
