The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and potential benefit of social support for weight loss shared among participants of a public Internet weight loss community. Therefore, we conducted a mixed-methods study to explore the characteristics of social support for weight loss exchanged among members of the Spark People.com online weight loss community. From the surveys, interviews, and messages, we identified and tabulated social support themes. The purpose of the survey was to assess demographic and clinical characteristics, use of social support features, and social support experiences of Spark People members. The unique combination of weight loss behavior, Internet communication, and demographics of community members suggests that social support definitions developed in other contexts may not fit well with Internet weight loss communities. Members of a large Internet weight loss community exchange social support in the form of encouragement and motivation, information, and shared experiences. To our knowledge, this is the first description of social support among members of a public Internet weight loss community. Consistent with descriptions of face-to-face social support [ 1 – 3 ], the major types of online social support for weight loss in this study are encouragement and motivation, information, and shared experiences. I moved out of the dorms and into an apartment this year, and since I bake a lot/have a bad habit of binge eating sweets I've gained enough weight that a lot of my clothes are tight or just don't fit me anymore :/ So now the goal is to lose about 20lbs to fit back into my current wardrobe properly and feel better about myself in general. I had some major oral surgery/orthodontic work that kept me from eating solid foods for a long time, and couldn't keep my weight on. The last few years have been me trying to get back to a healthy weight. So I've been doing this 20 minute video for the last three weeks. And for getting back to a healthy weight. I think for me on the weekdays the only thing that'll get me to work out is going to the gym, since unless I'm there I just collapse into my bed and sleep lol. But I'll have to check the video out for on the weekends! I'm not overweight or anything myself-I'm at a perfectly healthy weight for my height, but I used to be a loooot heavier so I'm kind of paranoid/sensitive about gaining weight back, and I find that when I'm around 130/140 lbs I'm pretty happy with myself and happy with sticking there, so I'd really like to get back to that weight. I had finally sorted them out and reached my fitness goal and weight goal of 130- and I'm hoping this year will be the year I can get back to that weight.
