Blood type diet - Diet and Weight Loss

The Blood Type diet is a way of eating that relies on an individual’s blood type (A, B, AB, or O) to dictate one’s diet. The Blood Type diet includes extensive lists of foods that are beneficial for each blood type. The food lists also include foods that each blood type should avoid and foods that are neutral or benign. Purported benefits of the Blood Type diet. As the diet changed and the blood type A evolved, antibodies for lectins to meat were formed. D’Adamo believes this is the reason individuals with blood type B developed fewer antibodies against lectins found in meat and grain. Type AB evolved when the A and B blood types intermingled. In this way the diet is unique and individual for each blood type. For example, chicken is considered neutral for individuals with blood type O and blood type A and is found on the foods to avoid list for individuals with blood type B and blood type AB. On the other hand wheat is highly beneficial for people with blood type A and neutral for those with blood type AB. D’Adamo outlines the best supplements for each blood type and addresses the best form of exercise for individuals of each blood type. The Blood Type diet is based on the fact that all foods have lectins, or proteins that can interact with antibodies in blood. By following the Blood Type diet, these foods and the offending lectins may be avoided, and health may be improved. D’Adamo reports health benefits in his patients that follow the Blood Type diet. While many followers of the Blood Type diet report improved health and weight loss, the Blood Type diet is not widely accepted.

The Blood Type Diet - Berkeley Wellness

The Blood Type Diet. Q: Whatever happened to the blood type diet? Popularized by the naturopath Peter D’Adamo in his 1996 book Eat Right 4 Your Type, the diet is based on the notion that people process food differently depending on their primary blood type (O, A, B or AB), which supposedly evolved at different points in human history. Eating the foods that your early ancestors ate at the time when that blood type arose will help you lose weight and lower your risk for chronic diseases, he says. A 2013 systematic review published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition concluded that though there is a possible link between certain blood types and increased vulnerability to particular diseases, “there is currently no evidence that an adherence to blood type diets will provide health benefits.”

Blood Type Diet : Eating for Types O, A, B

Could eating a diet based on your blood type - O, A, B, or AB - help you trim down and get healthier? D'Adamo claims that the foods you eat react chemically with your blood type. If you follow a diet designed for your blood type, your body will digest food more efficiently. That depends on your blood type. If you don't already know your blood type, you'll need to find that out. Limitations: Depending on your blood type, you may need to severely restrict the foods you eat. Exercise : The Blood Type Diet recommends exercises based on your blood type. Because the diet dictates that you eat very specific types of food based on your blood type, it doesn't allow much for personal tastes. The Blood Type Diet makes recommendations based solely on your blood type. But no matter your blood type, you should follow the same guidelines issued by The American Heart Association (AHA) for a low-fat and low-salt diet. On The Blood Type Diet, you’ll avoid processed food and simple carbs. If the Blood Type Diet intrigues you, consider this: The science is stacked behind traditional recommendations for healthy eating for weight loss - not restrictions based on the type of your blood.

Foods Most Beneficial for Type B Blood - Healthy Eating

Foods Most Beneficial for Type B Blood. Fish such as salmon are beneficial foods for type-B people on the blood type diet. If you have type-B blood, the foods that are beneficial for you differ from what's optimal for people with A, O or AB blood, claims Peter J. According to the diet's premise, people with blood type B descended from ancient nomads who traveled from eastern Africa to Asia, and by eating the same foods these people ate, a type-B person will lose weight and be healthier, D'Adamo contends. The nomads that D'Adamo says type-B people descended from ate a diet high in animal-based protein from both domesticated and hunted sources. People who have type-B blood should eat a variety of vegetables each day, especially green vegetables, which D'Adamo says will aid with weight loss by speeding up the metabolism. Wheat, barley, corn and rye are off-limits to type-B people on the blood type diet, while cereal grains such as oats, oat bran, rice bran, spelt and millet are encouraged, as are brown rice bread, rice cakes, Ezekiel or Essene bread and any other products made with oat or rice flour. For people who have type-B blood, licorice tea is allegedly a good way to avoid hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar.

Adamo's diet defines beneficial foods by blood type. Adamo, a naturopathic doctor and author, is correct, you can lose weight by eating foods based upon your blood type. Adamo suggests that the four different blood types - A, B, O and AB - contain different antibodies, and if humans eat foods that do not coincide with their blood type, they may gain weight and their health may suffer. Peter Adamo introduced his theory of eating to suit blood type. Eating a diet designed for your blood type can help improve your result. By eating a diet structured to fit your blood type, your health will improve, Adamo writes. If your blood type is O, your ancestry is that of a hunter and you should eat more protein. Joseph Christiano's Bloodtype Diet B : A Custom Eating Plan

The premise of this series is an old idea from the 80's that each bloodtype has certain foods that it cannot digest efficiently. This inefficient metabolism means that the person puts on weight even if the food is considered a "healthy" food. I was disappointed that he didn't have a chapter or even really a portion of a chapter on exercise but rather referred the reader to the main book. I liked that the books were available in individual bloodtype rather than having to buy a book that contained all of them and end up being overwhelmed with extraneous information. The recipes at the back were doable except for the smoothies which included his blood specific protein powder. Was this review helpful to you?

Does your blood type affect your diet

D'Adamo believes that based on your blood type, you react differently to substances called lectins, which are present on the surface of most foods. Adopting the proper diet for your blood type, according to D'Adamo, can lead to weight loss if you follow a lower calorie version, but to maintain the health benefits, the diet must be followed for good. D'Adamo notes that in his experience, eight out of 10 people report satisfaction with the diet, with the predominant benefits revolving around gut health, immune health (fewer infections) and weight loss. The more symptoms you have that are potentially associated with diet, especially gastrointestinal and food allergy-type symptoms (diarrhea, bloating, fatigue), the more closely you should follow your recommended way of eating. The diet for type O, the most common blood type, is a high-protein diet that limits wheat and encourages vigorous exercise. The type A diet, the second most common blood type, is a low-fat vegetarian diet that encourages gentle exercise such as yoga and golf. The B type diet is more varied and encourages moderate exercise, and the AB diet is a blend of type A and B. That being said, I'm not convinced that lectin and blood type are the answer. The suggested weight loss versions of the diet, particularly for type O, would not be healthy and balanced. Also, for the O type diet, D'Adamo states in his book that the success "depends on your use of lean, chemical-free meats, poultry and fish."

Putting blood type diets to the test

Earlier this month, the blood type diet came under fire by researchers from the University of Toronto. Their findings: Your blood type has nothing to do with how well you’ll do on the diet. The diet, made popular in 1996 by naturopathic physician Peter D’Adamo’s best-selling book Eat Right For Your Blood Type, proposes that your blood type (A, B, AB, O) determines your “susceptibility to illness, which foods you should eat, and how you should exercise.” The theory goes that our blood type reveals the dietary habits of our ancestors. The plan for Type AB blood is a blend of Type A and Type B dietary advice. Following your blood type diet promises to help you stay healthy, live longer and achieve your ideal weight. If you eat foods incompatible with your blood type, the author contends your digestion will suffer and your metabolism will slow down. To put the blood type theory to the test, University of Toronto researchers analyzed the usual diets of 1,455 healthy young adults and calculated a score indicating how closely their diets matched one of the four blood type diets (A, B, AB or O). But here’s the catch: blood type had nothing to do with these favourable effects. Participants did well if their usual diets closely matched the Type A and Type AB dietary advice whether their blood type was A, B, AB or O. It’s disappointing (at least to me) that the diet’s entire premise (one that sold more than seven million books worldwide) – your blood type dictates what foods you should and shouldn’t eat – is false. One the other hand, it’s encouraging that the blood type diet (Type A and AB plans) appears to live up to its promise of helping people stay healthy and achieve a healthy weight (provided, of course, you can stick to it for the long term). Does the diet promote a way of eating that’s good for your kids?

The Blood Group Diet Review - Weight Loss

At least, that’s what Dr Peter D’Adamo, naturopath and creator of the Blood Type Diet claims in his book Eat Right For Your Blood Type. But while Cheryl might be a fan of the Blood Type Diet, most medical and nutrition experts aren’t, and agree that the theory is complete nonsense. Consequently, he says, by following a diet designed specifically for your blood type, your body digests and absorbs food more efficiently, with the result that you lose weight. Nevertheless, Dr D’Adamo believes because our type O ancestors survived and thrived on a high-protein, meat-based diet, that’s the type of diet blood group Os should follow in the 21st century. The creation of blood type A around this time meant our ancestors did well on a vegetarian-based diet. Meaning that people with blood group AB can eat a mixture of the foods suitable for both blood group A and blood group B. This is the most common blood group in the UK. This is the second most common blood type in the UK. People with this rare blood type should eat a combination of the foods recommended for blood groups A and B. Medical experts universally agree that the theory is nonsense, and say there is absolutely no link between our blood group and the diet we eat.
