Eating Brown Rice + Weight Gain - Calorie Count

If I happen to just watch the carbs & eat fruit & vegetables without any whole grains, this doesn't happen. i am insulin resistant and i gain weight when i eat too many carbs, or even smaller amounts of processed carbs and i lose weight and feel satisfied when i dont eat carbs. even if you arent insulin resistant you may have an intolerance to those foods. I think there is a lot of misinformation out there that as long as you eat a certain number of calories you wont gain weight. the problem with this is that when you are insulin resistant your body stores more calories than it normally should, because you have excess insulin.   you end up storing more calories than you think you would even if you do all the math right. a lot of people do low fat diets which end up being high carb diets, thinking that this is the best option for health. you dont get diabetes and what not from eating too much fat and insulin resistance (aggravated by too much sugar) increases your chances of getting heart disease. Im sorry this post came out so long, but a lot of people think that its all about the calories you put into your body. what you eat matters too and some people handle carbs well and others have an extreme intolerance to them. When you look at the high GI levels, you start to realize that there are certain things you have to avoid if you have Type 2 diabetes.

Added to this, it’s not uncommon to read that wheat, found in foods like bread and pasta, can cause bloating leaving many of us believing that cutting them out of our diet will help us lose weight. In fact, it’s usually the fat we add to carbs that boosts the calorie content, such as butter on a jacket potato or bread, creamy sauces with pasta and frying rice. If a diet restricts certain foods such as bread, potatoes, pasta, cereal and rice, it also restricts calories and it’s this that causes weight loss. Most carbohydrate rich foods, particularly unprocessed ones such as wholemeal bread, wholegrain cereals, whole-wheat pasta, brown rice and jacket potatoes, are low in fat, contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals and make an important contribution to our fibre intakes. Go for high-fibre carbs such as brown rice, wholegrain cereal, wholemeal bread, potato cooked with the skin on and wholewheat pasta. Also, when you’re trying to lose weight, it’s important to count the calories provided by bread, potatoes, rice, cereals and pasta. Refined white rice - A Black Girl's Guide To Weight Loss

They may be white in color, but they’re certainly not of the “American White Rice” ilk. But first, I think it might be important to explain the process that the grain must go through (because rice starts out as a much larger grain) in order to become the white rices and pastas that we enjoy so much. It goes through a rice husker to have the outermost shell removed, and you’re left wit brown rice. The endosperm is, well… To get white rice, the outer husk and bran (the fiber-packed part?) are stripped from the grain, as is the nutrient-filled germ. Sounds like all of the good stuff is stripped from the grain, right? Processing plants will “add” vitamin D and whatever else into the endosperm so that total nutritional value isn’t lost, but it pales in comparison to what originally was in the rice in the first place. As in, what it grew from the ground carrying. All are lost when rice makes the transition from brown to white. Since you can see that white rice is brown rice with all the valuable stuff stripped of it with some other stuff injected in to “enrich” the endosperm, you can see why it’s so easy to cook white rice… In short, there is a benefit to taking the leap away from enriched white rice. Are you taking the leap?

Facts About Carbs - Eating Carbs and Losing Weight

But the truth is, you need these types of carbohydrate-rich foods to give your body energy. Refined carbs, which are found in white bread and white pasta, sugar, cookies and cakes, offer little in the way of nutrition and get broken down by your body and used quickly. On the other hand, complex carbs (such as vegetables and whole-grain products) don't cause the same spike in blood sugar levels. That's because calories matter most: Eat too many calories (from bread, pasta or anything else) and you'll gain weight; eat less than you burn and you'll lose weight. The catch: Starchy carbs are high in calories, so you have to keep serving sizes small—but many people find it all too easy to go overboard on pasta, potatoes, rice and even the better-for-you whole grains like whole-wheat pasta or brown rice. Your rice, pasta and potato portions at each meal should be about the size of a standard tennis ball. Pasta, bread and rice aren't the only carbs. But grains tend to pack more than these other foods (although some starchy veggies like potatoes, corn, peas and butternut squash are relatively high in carbs, too). Your body burns off carbs the same way no matter when you eat them. From a weight-loss perspective, how many calories you eat overall matters most: Having 1 cup of brown rice at dinner affects your metabolism the same way as eating 1 cup at lunch. Keep in mind that a package may say multigrain, high-fiber or made with whole grains, but that's no guarantee that the product is 100% whole-grain—or even good for you. Your best bets are foods that list the grain preceded by the words whole or whole-grain (for example, whole wheat, whole oats, whole rye, etc.) as the very first ingredient. Or you may prefer the taste of a 100% whole-grain brown rice- or quinoa-based pasta to the whole-wheat kind. (You can also do this with cereal, starting with 1/2 corn flakes and 1/2 bran flakes, for example.) Or try a whole-grain pasta blend, like Ronzoni Healthy Harvest, which is made with a mix of whole-wheat flour and white flour. Another option: If you're not usually a fan of whole-wheat bread, check out "white whole-wheat." It's made with a type of wheat that has a softer texture and milder taste, so it's more like the traditional white bread that you're probably used to eating.

I’m of course talking about brown rice and white rice, the yin and yang of annoying diet arguments. Brown rice is the clean/healthy/good one, and white rice is dirty/unhealthy/bad one. Most people know this, and it’s typically the first reason given for why brown rice is the better choice. And a meal of white rice + some fiber/fat/protein vs a meal of brown rice + that same fiber/fat/protein will digest at virtually the exact same speed and affect blood sugar in virtually the exact same way. The next area that brown rice is said to have a huge advantage over white rice is nutritional content. That’s their white rice and brown rice. For this reason, brown rice definitely does have the advantage over white rice in this area. All the fun stuff), white rice has an advantage over brown. And while rice in general tends to be one of the least problematic foods in this regard, the simple fact is that brown rice WILL cause some issues for some people, while white rice most likely never will. And every time they tested a brown and white rice from the same brand, the brown version always had a lot more than the white. Is this a reason to avoid brown rice and eat white instead? I personally like the taste of white and brown rice damn near equally.
