Healthy Nuts : Health Benefits For Almonds, Walnuts

Healthy Nuts: Health Benefits For Almonds, Walnuts, Cashews, Peanuts And More. But weight loss isn't the only benefit found in almonds, walnuts, cashews and the like. Nuts, like almonds, hazel nuts, peanuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts and cashews can all play a role in reducing the risk of heart disease, according to a Harvard review . Nuts are also rich in arginine, an amino acid that converts to nitric oxide in the body and helps blood vessels to relax . The researchers theorize that the nut's richness in gamma-tocopherol , a type of vitamin E, may be the key to cancer protection, although further research is required. The 2013 review of nut health benefits found a modest improvement in overall weight, but several studies have found that nuts can play a role in weight maintenance. That's because nuts are satisfying - a "high satiety" food - that is metabolized slowly by the body, thanks to high fiber counts. A walnut a day may keep bad cholesterol away, according to a 2010 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine that found a 7.4 percent reduction in "bad" LDL cholesterol and an 8.3 percent reduction in the ratio of LDL to HDL, reported Web MD . Brazil nuts, which are high in the mineral selenium, may provide some protection against advanced prostate cancer , according to preliminary research presented at the American Association of Cancer Research. Thanks to the healthy dose of vitamin E that nuts can deliver, they are considered a brain food - helping to prevent cognitive decline that happens with age. Peanuts (even though they are legumes, we commonly group them with nuts), in particular, may be a good choice because they are high in the B-vitamin folate , which improves neural health, reducing risk of cognitive decline. Eating about two handfuls of nuts, one UCLA study found, could improve the quality of sperm, in terms of its "vitality, motility, and morphology," the researchers reported . And tell us in the comments: What's your favorite way to eat nuts?

Further research shows that eating almonds along with a high glycemic index food significantly lowers the glycemic index of the meal and lessens the rise in blood sugar after eating. Eating almonds reduced the glycemic index (GI) of the meal and subjects' rise in blood sugar in a dose-dependent manner—the more almonds consumed, the lower the meal's GI and the less the rise in subjects' blood sugar after eating. The Worst Nut Butters for Weight Loss - Eat This not That

Even worse, you’re missing the healthy fat that could keep you feeling full, Lemond adds. The healthy fats in full-fat peanut butter will not only fight heart disease, but also help keep you from unhealthy snacks later in the day. “Hazelnut spread is marketed as healthy, but it’s loaded with sugar, packing a whopping 21 grams of the sweetener in 2 tablespoons,” says Lemond. If you really enjoy hazelnuts, you’re better off going for the nut in its whole form. The added sugar can also contribute to weight gain if you’re not careful. But bear in mind that it’s still considered high for a nut butter. And with fancy nut butter, it‘s easy to need a reminder — we’re used to thinking of them as a routine sandwich spread . A bare nut butter packs 160 to 200 calories without any add-ins, so calories to add up fast once the caramel is mixed in. “When companies add calorie- and sugar-laden ingredients that offer little nutrition like honey or chocolate, what potentially started out as a good nut butter can quickly go south,” says Lemond. Hydrogenated oil is just a fancy word for trans fat , the unhealthy fat that can raise bad cholesterol levels and promote inflammation in the body. Save your sweets for dessert, and choose a nut butter that only contains nuts (and maybe a little sea salt) for the clean spread you can feel good about. One serving, or two tablespoons, of nut butter should be no more than the size of a golf ball. Most nut butters clock in around 180 calories per serving, but this jar will bring you over the 200 mark for just one spoonful. It also hits the three-gram max sugar quota when it comes to nut butters, with sugar as the second ingredient.

Researchers found that people eating a diet rich in almonds lost more weight than those on a high-carb diet with the same number of calories. The findings also support those from a recent study that showed people on a low-carb diet lost more weight than those on a low-fat diet - even when the low-carb dieters ate 300 more calories a day. In the new study, researchers followed 65 overweight and obese adults - 70% of whom had type 2 diabetes - for 24 weeks. The almond diet contained 39% total fat including 25% from heart -healthy monounsaturated fats, while the non-almond diet contained 18% total fat, 5% from monounsaturated fats. Participants in the almond diet saw an 18% reduction in weight and body mass index (BMI) - a measure of weight based on height - compared with an 11% reduction in the non-almond dieters. Additionally, waist circumference in the almond group decreased by 14%, compared with a 9% decrease in the non-almond group. Systolic blood pressure, the upper number in blood pressure readings , dropped by 11% in almond eaters and stayed the same in the non-almond eaters. Is it ok to have unsweetened almond milk on a weight loss

Is it ok to have unsweetened almond milk on a weight loss diet? I normally have fat free milk which is about 90 calories a cup, 13g carbs and 0g fat. I recently tried un sweetened vanilla flavored almond milk, 40 calories a cup, 2g carbs, 3g fat. How many grams of fat per day are you supposed to eat on a weight loss diet? Yes, the almond milk is much better for you. With this substitution of almond milk for fat free milk, you’re getting 11g fewer carbohydrates and the fats that you get will be much healthier for your body than the casein (milk protein) that you would have gotten from the milk. With a bit of light exercise she’d need 2000 calories to maintain her weight at 145, and might need to cut to about 1750 or 1700 calories to lose weight safely at 1 to 2 lbs per week. Each gram of fat is worth 9 calories, so when losing weight on 1750 calories x 30 % fats / 9 calories/g = 58 g of fat in diet per day.
