Practical Tips for Running an Office Weight Loss Challenge


Regardless of the direction, we advocate implementing weight loss competitions and other fitness-related activities, such as steps or activity minutes, as part of the overall wellness program to increase engagement. Keep the competition short (but not too short). Keep the competition simple. Keep the prizes small. Keep the prizes fitness- or health-related. Keep competition on the calendar. Make competitions a regular part of the corporate wellness program so people can look forward to and prepare for them each year. For example, do an "exercise minutes" competition in the summer, a weight loss competition in the winter, and a steps/walking competition in the fall. A weight loss competition is not a corporate wellness program in and of itself. In fact, weight loss and other fitness competitions can increase usage and ROI of all other programs, so they are a perfect match. In general, corporations sponsoring weight loss and fitness competitions should offer supporting programs before, during, and after the competitions to encourage and commit to the long-term health of their employees. The Whole 30 Challenge Review on What I Wore


BETTER MOODS The winter is hard for me and I have pretty intense mood swings (especially while PMSing) all year round. NO MORE SPIKES and CRASHES - Before the Whole 30, my blood sugar would drop and make me shaky if I hadn’t eaten enough. My body fat dropped 1% in 30 days and I’m finally able to see more of my hard work at the gym! I didn’t weigh or measure myself for the entire 30 days of the Whole30 and gauged my progress on visual changes and strength! CONFIDENCE - I’ll spare you the long sob story here and simply say I’ve never felt better about myself. Maybe it’s the new way of eating, maybe it’s the working out, maybe it’s how strong and toned I feel. This is going to sound hyper dramatic, but for the first time in my life, I really truly feel beautiful.  This is the way we were meant to feel about ourselves and I’m so grateful for all of the external support I’ve had through this experiment. Some of the other key benefits have been sharing meals with my husband, practicing (and getting pretty good!) at cooking and feeling great overall. My regular breakfast - four scrambled eggs, avocado and berries is a good example - I wouldn’t trade that for a bagel and cream cheese any day of the week! This was one of the more challenging parts of the Whole30 for us because we love craft beers, cocktails and wine. They are focused too much on the end result. Those who do need to lose weight but haven’t committed to their fitness goals usually don’t have the tools to do it in a healthful and sustainable way. At the end of the challenge you have a large number people who feel as though they have failed. The have come to hate the weigh ins and perhaps participating in the program all together. Making it a normal part of the office, a part of how business is done, will go a lot further in creating a healthier and happier workforce. The future of workplace wellness will not be measured not in pounds lost. Workplace wellness can no longer be judged on its own but how it affects the overall bottom line for the business, its workers and the community it serves. I worked one company who wanted me to give presentations but they wouldn’t change the schedule or routine so it was easy for people to come. Putting the focus on long term health instead of simply weight loss without the necessary lifestyle change does nothing to increase wellness in the long term (or their bottom line). They are developing a wellness committee, but the “food as reward” culture is so entrenched. Get the picture? But, not surprisingly, the results were short-lived. They’ve offered free yoga, but only the same few people came each time. The step challenge can be kind of fun, especially if you work with a lot of data oriented people. Like the rest of our culture, businesses get too focused on the number on a scale and not on making changes in the office environment that lead to positive, permanent change.

I wish I could get involved in a work place challenge I work from home sadly and the only person I could give the 5 bucks to would be myself=( We did this at my work last year and the only thing you want to watch is men and woman in the same pool. All participants must get an initial, middle and a final weight. All participants must attend three out of the six brown bag sessions. The winning team will be based on the initial weight and the final weight. The team with the greatest percent of body weight loss will win the prize. As many of you know, I have hosted SEVERAL weight loss competitions at my work. On the starting day of the competition, have everyone give you their starting weight. You decide the time that people should come weigh in. Enter their name and starting weight onto the spreadsheet as they weigh in front of you. Cash any checks they have given you and keep all of the money in a safe place at home. Each week, on a certain day, have the participants come and weigh in in front of you. The host of the competition (You) are the biggest cheerleader for everyone. On the day the competition ends, have everyone come in for their final weigh in. Take their final weight and put it into the spreadsheet. You could have a “winner” reveal party at lunchtime that day or later in the day to reveal the winner in front of everyone or you can just give the winner the money after you know.
