The effect of Lamictal on weight has been studied quite a bit — in fact, some researchers even have looked at the drug as a possible treatment for obesity and as a treatment for binge-eating disorder . The results from the various clinical trials that have been conducted on Lamictal should be reassuring to people with bipolar disorder , since so many medications used to treat the condition can cause weight gain. Lamictal and Weight Gain or Loss. In the first clinical trials involving the drug, 5% of adults with epilepsy lost weight while taking Lamictal, while between 1% and 5% of patients with bipolar I disorder gained weight while on the drug. Meanwhile, a 2006 study comparing the effects on weight of Lamictal, lithium, and a placebo found that some patients receiving Lamictal gained weight, some lost weight, and most remained at about the same weight. Obese patients taking Lamictal lost an average of four pounds, while non-obese patients' weight remained essentially the same. Therefore, if you're already overweight, you and your psychiatrist may want to consider the possibility of additional weight gain in determining your medication regimen for your bipolar disorder. Those taking the placebo, meanwhile, lost around 7 pounds, so while those taking Lamictal lost more weight, they didn't lose all that much more. That study included 51 people with the condition — 26 of them received Lamictal, while 25 received a placebo. Those taking Lamictal lost more weight than those on the placebo (about 2.5 pounds versus about one-third of a pound), and they did have significant improvements in their blood sugar and cholesterol lab test results. The reason I mention the Zoloft is that I am taking Wellbutrin now without any other ADs and am not losing weight (though perhaps that's because I have lithium to keep me fat, which it does at this dosage, and to be fair, I'm not terribly fat, just fatter than I'd like). I started Wellbutrin on March 5th and I lost 45 lbs by the end of June. Can you rate your experience in the following areas and what dosage level you are on ? I started the generic form of welbutrin about 3 months ago and so far I have stayed stable at weight and the libido has elevated where it was nothing before :) so I can say that I am really happy with welbutrin the only thing that has been a pblm has been lack of sleep but thats still better then sleeping all the time as I had been on my other antidepressant. Initally, I was taking 100mg/day and I found that in the first 2 weeks, everything was worse. At about the 2 week point, things began to level out and I was feeling better. He increased to 200mg/day and I think that has been the perfect dose for me. My motivation has improved, not to where I want it to be, but enough to make me feel good about getting up and going. I desire it, but it's nothing too crazy, but it's definitely better and more satisfying than before starting the medication. Possibly because I don't feel the overwhelming feelings of grief and depression. So on those days where I make a plan about the things I want to do, I usually get up and do them. On days when I'm just lounging, I feel a bit anxious (maybe because the stimulant effect is not being effectively put into doing anything), which can feel overwhelming and make me not want to do much. Personally, I have been very satisfied with the effects and I think the higher the dosage, the more your natural ability to level out and work with the medication will be hindered or thrown off. My doctor said that being on the lowest dose that feels effective for you is the best option and, in my case, I greatly agree. My provider will be switching me to another med next month because he is very concerned with the weight loss and my BMI is way too low.
If Antidepressants Don't Cause Weight Gain, What Does? Most of the 11 antidepressants taken by the patients produced similar, small amounts of weight. Elavil and Wellbutrin were associated with the least weight gain and Celexa, the most. But even though Celexa caused significantly more weight to be gained, the actual amount was only a few pounds. Conclusion: The researchers said that patients should not be scared of taking antidepressants because they think they will gain weight. Your weight gain of 100 pounds on a combination of antidepressants is not related to your therapy? Weight was gained among those who had depression, but according to the author, only among those who had what she described as atypical depression, a depression characterized by increased appetite. However, they suggest that people who gain weight on antidepressants may be doing so not because of the medication, but because their depression has not gone away, and thus they continue to overeat. Most people are of normal weight before starting on their medication despite weeks of the mood disorder. If antidepressant drugs are not associated with weight gain, what is the explanation for the results of a year-long weight-loss trial with Prozac, many years ago, in which non-depressed, obese patients, gained weight? Alas, statistics are not going to help Sally and the many others who have indisputably gained weight on their antidepressant treatment, regardless of why they were being treated. One hopes that patients who are gaining weight are not ignored their weight gain because a study says that they should not be doing so.
My question is about the weight loss. The problem is that I have not been able to stop losing weight. I have lost 45 pounds now, and am considered underweight on the BMI scale. My doctor is suggesting switching medicines, but I don't want to do this because the Wellbutrin has been very effective in handling the anxiety/depression without destroying my sex drive, and I don't want to go on something that will ruin my sex drive and make me gain too much weight again like Zoloft. Has anyone had a similar situation, that could give me suggestions on how to stop the weight loss and safely put some weight back on? You can combine Zoloft and Wellbutrin. My pdoc is just learning the ropes, and I've had some trouble convincing her that weight loss is a side effect of wellbutrin.so I though I'd try here for some ideas. If the Wellbutrin is suppressing your appetite to the point that you're not eating adequate nutrition or to where your weight loss is noticeable to your PDoc (and she believes it's excessive), that's important too. This may sound rude but I wish I lost that much weight on Wellbutrin. I'm on Wellbutrin and I lost a bunch of weight. But what is the problem is that I'm highly anxious. And I'm enjoying the weight loss. I don't have firsthand experience with this as I haven't tried to go back on bupropion, but I have heard that, like a handful of meds, it may not work as well the second time.

I have maintained the weight I'm at for a year and a half now. I have been taking both Wellbutrin SR, 450mg/daily, and Topamax, 200mg/bid for a year and 9 months now, and the combination is great! It did work well for depression, and I did have the beneficial side effect of the weight loss as well. I had taken Prozac for about 6-7 years ago and it was perfect for me except the weight gain. The zoloft worked ok for the depression and anxiety. Worked better for the depression and anxiety. I've been on it for about 3 years and in the beginning, I lost about 15 -20 pounds. Now I've gained back all the weight and then some. I am taking the generic and it has been 10 days, and I have lost 15 pounds already taking it. I lost all the weight that I had gained on Paxil (and more) within 3 months. I'd rather lose weight than gain, but I also don't want to be a twig and feel exhausted all the time, which I find that I have been.

Wellbutrin works well for me and I don't want to stop taking it, but will have to if hair continues to fall out." - Karen RB 53. I have been on it for about 1 1/2 weeks now and have lost 8lbs, have ALOT more energy, and feel "better". It has helped me to know that I am not the only one going through this and looking for the same results. I finally broke down and went to the doctor about a year ago for depression. I tried about 3 different medications, Fluoxetine, Citilopram, and one other one but was only on each of them for the max of 2 months. My dr first started me on the 150 mg Bupropion (generic wellbutrin) sr and it worked for about 6 months. I went back to the doctor 3 days ago and discussed my problems and he uped me to 200mg Bupropion Sr 2 times a day for a total of 400mg. I had enough of the weight gain and stopped taking both medications. If 450 mg doesn't work I'll stop for 4-6 weeks and then restart to see if the weight loss starts again. I was taking it for ptsd and depression. It was so terrible I lost my job, my husband, my house, and the support of my family. I was taking prescribed medication and all of the sudden my life was a complete mess. I have stopped completely taking ALL medication for 6 months and I started counseling with a pastor and certified counselor. Now i am a person who is aware of my weight, have used diet and excise for many years and I am dumbfounded on the posts about using an ANTI-DEPRESSENT drug to lose weight.
Antidepressants and Weight Gain or Loss. However, an exploration of antidepressants and weight gain can give us some insight into the processes of obesity and the brain, so I will dive on in. It is a more complicated subject than you might expect, as the mechanisms aren't always clear, and mood disorders themselves can cause weight gain or loss. In acute treatment, the older class of tricyclic antidepressants (with one exception) and mirtazapine were associated with more weight gain, while all SSRIs and buproprion (wellbutrin) were associated with weight loss. In long term trials, the only one that was linked to significant weight loss was buproprion. The SSRIs except paxil were weight neutral (though citalopram had widely varying results), and paxil, mirtazapine, and amitriptyline (elavil) were associated with weight gain. They all have affinity for the histamine receptor and are anticholinergic . Alpha receptor blockers are also associated with weight gain, and mirtazapine and amitriptyline have that in spades. Drugs that cause weight loss have more affinity for dopamine and enhance serotonin function. Clozaril, an antipsychotic medication known for its ability to cause huge weight gain, does not cause weight gain in mice that lack the H 1 receptor. The SSRIs are interesting in that they seem to promote weight loss in the beginning, but (except for the strong fat-inducing anticholinergic paxil) are weight neutral in the long term. But, as I said at the beginning, understanding how these medicines affect weight gain and loss can give us some insights into how the brain (and possibly even the gut nervous system) works, and that is interesting.
