In a blog written about her dramatic weight loss Miss Johnson says that while she hasn't yet learned to love exercise, the results have made it tolerable. For starters, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition features participants who were actually rejected from Biggest Loser for weighing too much. And that's where the idea for Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition was born. The reason they were rejected from Biggest Loser is because that show's workout regimen is believed to be too intense people at that kind of weight level. Meanwhile, it seems that ABC has a lot of confidence in Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition: The network picked it up for a second season several months before launching the first.

Extreme Weight Loss (originally titled Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition) is a television program from ABC in which individuals volunteer to receive training and lifestyle changes from trainer Chris Powell and his wife, Heidi Powell. The show is slightly based on the original concept of Extreme Makeover, where individuals receive life-changing makeovers. The show however has faced criticisms over the health implications of rapid weight loss and misleading claims that the fitness trainer stays 3 months with the dieters.[ citation needed ]  On September 20, 2010, Chris Powell was announced as the trainer for the show, renamed Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition. The series officially premiered on May 30, 2011 and was the top summer launch for an ABC series debut since August 2009.  The third season, now renamed Extreme Weight Loss,  premiered on May 28, 2013.

This workout is designed for those who want to start losing weight and have not been active. This workout is for people, (like the people on the cover, when they first wanted to get fit), who are just starting out. Powell instructs with safety in mind and works on the upper body, the lower body, and the core. Level 2 is about 25 minutes. Powell works more on the upper body, lower body, and the core. Level 3 is about 30 minutes. Powell continues the upper body, lower body, and core work with longer aerobics, a series of squats, pushups, ab work and so on. We read the descriptions of each level and decided to skip right to level 3. The good thing is it offers low impact for people with bad knees, and it also offers variations of intensity for beginningers and such. I will do the workout again, but at my own pace, and now if I have a friend who is just beginning they will be able to keep up on their own with the tape as well.
As you know I’m not a fan of NBC’s hit weight loss show The Biggest Loser. But is the format – and the training – any better? And her home support system wasn’t the greatest. While watching the show, the look of the show and some of the commercial cutaways were reminiscent of Loser, but that’s where the similarities end. In fact, 90% of the show’s weight loss and work occurred without Powell present. That’s about 13.5 pounds per month; a far cry from the double-digit numbers posted weekly on The Biggest Loser, and in my opinion a much more healthy and reasonable rate of weight loss. What I like about the show was that it seemed to address more of the real issues surrounding weight gain and loss; home life, emotion issues, and the psychology that plays a tremendous part in success. I think it’s important to not just show the before and after, but explain the in between. Overall, the pilot episode was good, and I’m pleased to say a departure from the usual ‘unreal reality’ weight loss shows. Sure the show was rough around the edges but it did a great job of conveying a real journey, with a real person, in a real setting, and ending with a real result. And Chris Powell seems like the right guy for the job.
Lots of discussion about the relationship between weight loss and health, as well as the importance of having family and friends' support during a weight-loss journey. On the other hand, a lot of attention is paid to how people look, and the show fails to address weight-loss-related issues like building muscle mass and the dangers of over training. After a one-week boot camp designed to teach weight-loss clients new exercise and eating habits, Powell moves into their home to help with the first three months of weight loss. This series stays in stride with the dramatic but family-friendly stories about transformation and happiness that the Extreme Makeover franchise is known for by offering positive messages about losing weight to get healthy and develop better self-esteem. Like many other weight-loss programs, the show focuses on losing pounds without discussing factors like gaining muscle mass and the dangers that come with over training. It also fails to address some of the physiological and emotional barriers to losing weight. Families can talk about weight and weight-loss shows.
