Can sitting on your buttocks in front of a computer give you the perfect body you're looking for? In the past few years, numerous Internet diet sites have sprung up to fill a gap between the personal guidance you get from a nutritionist or support group and the privacy of dieting on your own. With the help of some top nutritionists, we took a look at five of the most popular sites — analyzing them for their meal plans, their user-friendliness, and the accountability and support they offer. With the help of an online questionnaire, you can pick a basic reduced-calorie plan created by the site's in-house nutritionists or choose from 20 others, including Atkins and the Blood Type Diet. Once you choose your diet, the site provides a weekly meal plan, recipes, and shopping lists. Verdict You'll do well if you pick the right plan and follow it — but you can also go really wrong if you pick a fad diet and don't opt for any of the support features. Pony up the extra cash and do some research on the plans before you dive in. What the Experts Think "The site is doing a good job, with the points counter and virtual weigh-ins," says Tara Gidus, R. What We Think The site is the most user-friendly of the five, and its articles, testimonials, and message boards were motivating. "Features like the online weight tracker and journaling encourage you to come back to the site every day," Dr. That accountability is missing from the book and from some other online programs. What We Think We love the fact that dietitians answer most posted questions in 12 to 24 hours and that you can call a dietitian with a specific query. It's akin to the financial software Quicken, but instead of debts and income, you track calories burned and consumed.
Support Groups – Educating, Motivating and Celebrating Weight-Loss Surgery Patients. Weight-loss surgery investigators seeking information and the “real story” Our experience with thousands of weight-loss surgery patients and hundreds of support groups has provided us some valuable insight into why people attend support groups, how they are benefiting and why those who are not attending should. Education: Quality support groups provide more than just social and emotional support. When she turned back around the little boy was gone, and she panicked immediately. As weight-loss surgery patients, we sometimes feel alone and misunderstood in the real world. Support groups are a place to find people who provide us with understanding, compassion and encouragement. Support groups provide patients a time to share their success; to have a moment in the sun, to be queen or king of the prom, to graduate, or to receive a personal recognition for their achievement with a pin, photo or certificate. The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and potential benefit of social support for weight loss shared among participants of a public Internet weight loss community. Therefore, we conducted a mixed-methods study to explore the characteristics of social support for weight loss exchanged among members of the Spark People.com online weight loss community. From the surveys, interviews, and messages, we identified and tabulated social support themes. The purpose of the survey was to assess demographic and clinical characteristics, use of social support features, and social support experiences of Spark People members. The unique combination of weight loss behavior, Internet communication, and demographics of community members suggests that social support definitions developed in other contexts may not fit well with Internet weight loss communities. Members of a large Internet weight loss community exchange social support in the form of encouragement and motivation, information, and shared experiences. To our knowledge, this is the first description of social support among members of a public Internet weight loss community. Consistent with descriptions of face-to-face social support [ 1 – 3 ], the major types of online social support for weight loss in this study are encouragement and motivation, information, and shared experiences. Most importantly, what is the objective effect of online social support via these communities in terms of weight loss and other patient-valued outcomes? Online social support interactions play a prominent role in the weight loss efforts of members of a large, public Internet weight loss community. Community members report that the social support helps them cope with being overweight and helps them lose extra weight. Benefits of recruiting participants with friends and increasing social support for weight loss and maintenance.
Online weight-loss support programs have been gaining in popularity, and a new study suggests that for some, they work better than their real-world counterparts in building a person's confidence. The results showed that participants in a weight-loss support group that "met" in a virtual world were more likely to report eating healthier and being more physically active after 12 weeks than those who participated in a support group that met in real life. "They were more confident in their ability to exercise," and more confident that they would maintain their real-life exercise regime in the face of detractors, such as bad weather or going on vacation, said study researcher Jeanne Johnston, assistant professor of kinesiology at Indiana University. There was no difference between the online group and the real-life group in terms of how much weight they lost . The virtual "room" where the meetings took place included treadmills and exercise bikes that the avatars could use in their workouts, Johnston said. Of course, these virtual workouts didn't burn any real-life calories , but they built participants' confidence in their ability to exercise, Johnston said. Aronne created an online weight-loss program called BMIQ, and said that research has shown that a key component of making these programs work is capturing the spirit of a real-life meeting. Both Aronne and Johnston said that online programs won't work for everyone. Another drawback is that for participants in online programs, it may be easier to become distracted, Aronne said.

We'll start with Tops, a support system for dieters trying to lose weight. TOPS: The Premise. Chapter leaders are volunteers from the TOPS membership. In addition to weekly support meetings, the national organization offers incentives for weight loss and even crowns a new weight-loss king and queen each year. TOPS members who reach their goal weight, which is supposed to be set with the help of a health care professional when you join, are eligible for membership in KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). Little is different with the maintenance membership; KOPS members still attend meetings with TOPS members and have weigh-ins, etc. Kids and teens are welcome in the program, too. You can find most of the material from TOPS News and read TOPS success stories. For people who feel more comfortable figuring out their own path to weight loss, TOPS offers a loose system of support but little more. Through group support and some weight-loss competitions, TOPS provides incentives for weight loss. The competitions are set up so that you compete only within your own age category and weight class. However, TOPS recommends that its members go to a health care professional for personalized diets and physical activity plans. Weekly meetings offer the only real consistent component of TOPS.

Several dozen people whose lives have been changed by weight-loss surgery were joined by relatives and members of their First Health weight-loss surgery team in celebrating their new health status during the Second Annual “Celebrate Your Success” celebration. With the support of her family, she decided it was time to make her health a priority, and she chose weight-loss surgery at First Health. Since the surgery, Jamie's health has drastically improved. The First Health Fitness Exercise is Medicine program is available to teach weight-loss surgery patients the importance of exercise and assist in establishing an exercise program. Jo Ann received the gastric sleeve less than two years ago from First Health. Since her surgery, Jo Ann has gone from a size 20 to a size 8, and she feels great. She currently counsels bariatric patients both pre- and post-operatively and serves as patient navigator for the First Health Bariatric Center and program coordinator for the Diabetes and Nutrition Education Program at First Health. Melissa works closely with the bariatric multi-disciplinary team to help patients gain insight and high quality education while providing encouragement and support throughout their weight-loss journey. The clinical coordinator for the First Health Bariatric Center, Jan Norris developed a passion for bariatrics after joining Pinehurst Surgical in 2006. In the role of clinical coordinator, she serves as a patient advocate for the program. Her personal experience as a bariatric surgery patient, her professional knowledge and her friendly personality provide the perfect combination for developing a trusting long-term relationship with patients. Jan handles the clinical coordination of patients, surgeries and insurance. She also works closely with our bariatric surgeons, nursing staff, hospital staff, psychologists, nutritionists, referring physicians and primary care providers to ensure the best possible continuity of care for our patients. As the clinical coordinator, she navigates pre-operative patients through the pre-operative clearance process from seminar to surgery that includes assessing the candidacy of patients for bariatric surgery, reviewing medical history, initiating referrals and scheduling appointments for all pre-operative clearances.
The program includes daily snacks and dessert, so you won't feel deprived. The site also includes the South Beach Diet Fitness Club, consisting of Pilates-based core movements with pictures and step-by-step video instruction. The site hosts live weekly chats with diet and fitness experts, message boards, and a buddy system to pair you with a fellow dieter for more motivation. The online community is very active, and "Spark Teams" of other members will help keep you motivated on bad days. Articles and tools address every aspect of health with regard to weight loss (nutrition, fitness, attitude, and behavior) to find the right diet strategy that fits into your lifestyle. It also gives users realistic goals, doing the best job of explaining the healthiest rate of weight loss and how to keep it up. The site has a thorough fitness section as well, with physical fitness routines tailored to your abilities, goals, and interests. The program allows you to choose from different diet tracks depending on sex, age, and dietary restrictions (diabetic and vegetarian). While there is also a fitness component including exercise logs, plans, and tips, this is primarily a food and diet site. The site also has recipes galore — you can search by cuisine (Thai, anyone?), difficulty, prep time, and point values, and tag recipes that meet the plan's guidelines for "filling foods." But since there's no specific meal plan to follow, you're on your own to create a menu based on your point allotment.
