Contrave Review - Weight Loss Programs, Pills, Plans, Diet

I’ve been on Contrave for a month and a half. The nausea and dizziness came and went here and there but the neurological side effects were too much for me. And add more to the concept. Started back 6 days ago with 2 pills a day, not the 4 I was taking. I was on Phentermine for 4 months and lost 30 lbs. In the two weeks with diet and exercise. I’ve been taking contrave for almost 5 weeks now and have lost 17 pounds, I have no side effects except for some days I’m a little tireder then others. But other then that this pill has been my wonder blue pill and I have been very pleased with the results. Prescribed contrave for me and I have been taking it for one month with no adverse side affects. I have been for five weeks now I have not experienced any side effects and I have lost 23 pounds. For me it was worth whatever side effects could be contributed to the med. Not only was I dieting and exercising before the med and not losing weight — I was continuing to gain.

FDA Approves Orexigen Diet Pill Contrave - Business Insider

The Food and Drug Administration has approved Contrave "as treatment option for chronic weight management in addition to a reduced-calorie diet and physical activity," the agency announced on Wednesday. "Drugs are not the answer to epidemic obesity, but they can be of help in select cases," David L. More than  a third of Americans  are obese, and while pharmaceutical companies have been racing to find a treatment with blockbuster potential, Katz suggests that prescribing an anti-obesity drug should not become the standard treatment. First, the drug is meant to be used alongside, not in place of, a reduced-calorie diet and exercise. The Renasci researchers writing in the International Journal of Obesity noted that based on trial results so far, Contrave "would not satisfy the criterion" of the FDA's European counterpart "for a clinically effective antiobesity drug." "But the potential toxicity of this drug is considerable, and the weight will likely be regained if the drug is ever stopped." What are the side effects? What are the major drugs competing with Contrave? "The argument for approving weight loss drugs is not that [they are] really very good, but rather that 'something is better than nothing,'" he said. Contrave is not a solution to the obesity epidemic, and it's certainly not the best plan of action for most people struggling with excess weight. "As the majority of patients are unlikely to achieve the high degree of weight loss that they are seeking, it is questionable how willing they will be to pay for Contrave," the Renasi scientists note in the International Journal of Obesity .

Contrave Diet Pill, Side Effects - You But Skinny

Contrave is weight loss medication produced in the US by Orexigen—a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in producing anti-obesity medicines. Contrave is their most recent product and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it for prescription use, but the tablets have the potential to cause a number of worrying side effects so the medication’s prescription-only status would appear to be warranted. What is Contrave and how does it Work? It must always be used alongside a low calorie diet and regular exercise, and it is worth noting the FDA has only approved its use as a weight loss medication when it is used in this way, not as a stand-alone weight loss initiative. Contrave contains just two active ingredients, but the manufacturer’s website fails to provide the inclusion rates. Week 1: One tablet taken in the morning. Week 2: One table in the morning + one tablet in the evening. Week 3: Two tablets in the morning + one tablet in the evening. Week 4: Two tablets in the morning + two tablets in the evening. Tablets must be swallowed whole and Orixigen warns against taking Contrave with high fat meals because this may increase the likelihood of seizures. The only side effects I’ve experienced is a little lower back pain and a dry mouth. I stuck with it for 3 weeks, but the side effects were unbearable. In the US Contrave is only available via a doctor’s prescription and it seems likely that the governing bodies of other countries will apply similar restrictions. Phen375 is available to buy direct from its own official website and does not require a prescription in most countries (including the the US, Canada, Australia and the UK)

CONTRAVE was evaluated for safety in five double-blind placebo controlled trials in 4,754 overweight or obese patients (3,239 patients treated with CONTRAVE and 1,515 patients treated with placebo) for a treatment period up to 56 weeks. In CONTRAVE clinical trials, 24% of subjects receiving CONTRAVE and 12% of subjects receiving placebo discontinued treatment because of an adverse event. The most frequent adverse reactions leading to discontinuation with CONTRAVE were nausea (6.3%), headache (1.7%) and vomiting (1.1%). Adverse reactions that were reported by greater than or equal to 2% of patients, and were more frequently reported by patients treated with CONTRAVE compared to placebo, are summarized in Table 3. Table 3: Adverse Reactions Reported by Obese or Overweight Patients With an Incidence (%) of at Least 2% Among Patients Treated with CONTRAVE and More Common than with Placebo. The following additional adverse reactions were reported in less than 2% of patients treated with CONTRAVE but with an incidence at least twice that of placebo: In the one-year controlled trials of CONTRAVE, the proportion of patients reporting one or more adverse reactions related to psychiatric and sleep disorders was higher in the CONTRAVE 32/360 mg group than the placebo group (22.2% and 15.5%, respectively). These events were further categorized into sleep disorders (13.8% CONTRAVE, 8.4% placebo), depression (6.3% CONTRAVE, 5.9% placebo), and anxiety (6.1% CONTRAVE, 4.4% placebo). Patients who were 65 years or older experienced more psychiatric and sleep disorder adverse reactions in the CONTRAVE group (28.6%) compared to placebo (6.3%), although the sample size in this subgroup was small (56 CONTRAVE, 32 placebo); the majority of these events were insomnia (10.7% CONTRAVE, 3.1% placebo) and depression (7.1% CONTRAVE, 3.1% placebo). Adverse reactions involving attention, dizziness, and syncope occurred more often in individuals randomized to CONTRAVE 32/360 mg group compared to placebo (15.0% and 5.5%, respectively). The most common cognitive -related adverse reactions were attention disorders (2.5% CONTRAVE, 0.6% placebo). Adverse reactions involving dizziness and syncope were more common in patients treated with CONTRAVE (10.6%) than in placebo-treated patients (3.6%); dizziness accounted for almost all of these reported events (10.4% CONTRAVE, 3.4% placebo). Dizziness was the primary reason for discontinuation for 0.9% and 0.3% of patients in the CONTRAVE and placebo groups, respectively. Increases in serum creatinine that exceeded the upper limit of normal and were also greater than or equal to 50% higher than baseline occurred in 0.6% of subjects receiving CONTRAVE compared to 0.1% receiving placebo.

Long - awaited diet pill Contrave gets U.S. approval

It’s the third obesity drug in over 10 years to get FDA approval. A new diet pill Contrave got approval to be sold in the United States on Wednesday, only the third obesity treatment in more than a decade to win approval from the Food and Drug Administration. Made by Orexigen Therapeutics Inc., Contrave is a combination of the antidepressant bupropion and Orexigen's formulation of naltrexone, designed to prevent drug dependence. Contrave joins Vivus Inc.'s Qsymia and Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc.'s Belviq, both approved in 2012, in the battle to be the treatment of choice and at least one analyst expects the new entrant's sales to top that of its rivals by 2016. Government and private health insurers are reluctant to cover Belviq and Qsymia, unconvinced of their long-term efficacy and given that patients often drop out of the treatment. "For all the obesity drugs that are out there, only 30 to 40 percent of the health maintenance organizations pay for obesity coverage," said Daniel Lang, analyst on RS Investments' Value Fund, which holds a stake in all three companies. "That speaks to the relative apathy toward obesity as a serious condition." Sales to eclipse that of Belviq and Qsymia by 2016. Contrave sales are expected to be about $200 million in 2016, slightly higher than Belviq's $180 million and well ahead of Qsymia's $150 million, said Andrews, who covers all three companies. Among these are the notorious "fen-phen" combination that was pulled out in 1997 due to heart valve problems and Sanofi SA's Acomplia, taken off the market in 2008. The shares closed up 0.85 percent at $5.90 on the Nasdaq on Wednesday.

FDA approves weight - management drug Contrave

“When used as directed in combination with a healthy lifestyle that includes a reduced-calorie diet and exercise, Contrave provides another treatment option for chronic weight management for people who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition.” The effectiveness of Contrave was evaluated in multiple clinical trials that included approximately 4,500 obese and overweight patients with and without significant weight-related conditions treated for one year. In this trial, 42 percent of patients treated with Contrave lost at least 5 percent of their body weight compared with 17 percent of patients treated with placebo. In this trial, 36 percent of patients treated with Contrave lost at least 5 percent of their body weight compared with 18 percent of patients treated with placebo. If a patient has not lost at least 5 percent of baseline body weight, Contrave should be discontinued, as it is unlikely that the patient will achieve and sustain clinically meaningful weight loss with continued treatment. Because it contains bupropion, Contrave has a boxed warning to alert health care professionals and patients to the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors associated with antidepressant drugs. Contrave can cause seizures and must not be used in patients who have seizure disorders. Contrave should be discontinued and not restarted in patients who experience a seizure while being treated with Contrave. Contrave can also raise blood pressure and heart rate and must not be used in patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Blood pressure and pulse should be measured prior to starting the drug and should be monitored at regular intervals, particularly among patients with controlled high blood pressure prior to treatment. Patients undergoing an abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates and antiepileptic drugs should not take Contrave. A cardiovascular outcomes trial to assess the cardiovascular risk associated with Contrave use; A clinical trial to evaluate the potential for interactions between Contrave and other drugs.

Contrave : Is New Diet Pill Right For You

Called Contrave, the latest drug can be used by obese and overweight adults who have at least one other obesity-related condition, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes. According to the FDA, it is only effective when used in combination with a healthy lifestyle  —  including a nutritious low-calorie diet and exercise — and is only to be prescribed as part of an overall weight-loss plan. D., says the new medicine holds great promise for people who combine its use with regular exercise and a reduced-calorie diet. Notes Contrave was first recommended for approval by an FDA advisory panel in 2011, but the agency rejected it at the time. Gulfo argues the FDA should have approved the drug years ago, when it had all the evidence it needed that the medication is not only effective, but also safe. And that’s what it’s really all about: [the need to] get drugs that are safe and effective in the hands of the doctors.” The FDA approved Contrave for people unable to lose weight through diet and exercise alone who aren’t ready for weight-loss surgery. And the FDA has approved two other weight-loss drugs in just the past two years — Qsymia and Belviq. But it is not for everyone, and — like past diet pills — Contrave can cause risky side effects. It can also increase blood pressure, and should not be used in people with uncontrolled high blood pressure, according to the FDA. In addition, Contrave increases the risk for seizures, and should not be used by those with seizure disorders. “[But] for the right patient who’s exercising and watching their diet, it’s great.”

"Out of the past 50 years, there have only been three medications approved, and one is already off the market," said Kushner. "A third of the population is obese, and we only have a few medications."
