Heart - healthy diet - Baptist Hospital East

Research has shown that such a diet prevents heart disease, reduces the risk for a second heart attack, and helps cholesterol-lowering statin drugs work better. The salt-restrictive DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is proven to help lower blood pressure, and may have additional benefits for preventing heart disease, stroke, and heart failure. The Atkins diet restricts complex carbohydrates in vegetables and, particularly, fruits that are known to protect against heart disease. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, low GI diets are not recommended for weight loss or weight maintenance since they have not been proven to be effective. Some people do find that low-carbohydrate diets help with weight loss in the short term. But there has been debate about whether Atkins and other low-carbohydrate diets can increase the risk for heart disease, as people who follow these diets tend to eat more animal-saturated fat and protein and less fruits and vegetables. Low-fat diets that are high in fiber, whole grains, legumes, and fresh produce may offer health advantages in addition to their effects on cholesterol, including helping maintain a healthy weight. Very low-fat diets may also reduce calcium absorption, and absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins D, K, A, and E. In general, reducing calories while increasing exercise is still the best method for maintaining weight loss and preventing serious conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. Even greater amounts of weight loss can help improve LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol) levels. Weight loss also helps reduce the need for blood pressure medication, improve blood glucose (sugar) levels, and lower the risk for developing type 2 diabetes. A weight loss of 5 to 10% within the first 6 months of starting these changes can help improve cholesterol levels and other health indicators. If you have risk factors for heart disease or diabetes and do not achieve weight loss from diet and lifestyle changes alone, your provider may recommend adding a prescription medication to your weight loss plan.

Have you heard that Baptist Health Medical Center-Little Rock, along with six other hospitals in Arkansas are going “Baby Friendly?”  Mothers who deliver their baby in a Baby-Friendly facility can be sure that all policies and procedures in place will support her feeding choice, and that all of the staff is on board to help her be successful. The BFHI assists hospitals in giving all mothers the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies or feeding formula safely, and gives special recognition to hospitals that have done so. Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) of Little Rock said that performing uninterrupted CPR on the scene has returned cardiac activity to almost 33 percent of patients. That figure hovered around 15 percent before the new guidelines took effect Nov. Doug Holloway, with the Baptist Health Heart Institute, agrees that the new protocol is showing positive results.

This was the most uncleaned hospital that I have ever been in, from the waiting room with dust and crumbs between the chairs, to the room having flies on the walls and floors. The staff was unattended to the patients. In my case my mother was told by one doctor that she be right back after looking at X-rays she took when we first got back to the triage area, then was told by a nurse that they were waiting on test. If you go for anything other than the E. They don't check on you & you could be dead before they knew cause my husband pulled all wires off with alarms going off & nothing, I called for nurse 3 times & nothing., Only time we saw her other than her check in at shift change was to tell us we would have a room in about 30 mins after the previous nurse said we would be admitted & in a room at 6pm. View more got iv antibiotic that they let run out & blood started running back in the iv. I believe the nurse was SARAH (not sure) worked 2/15/2013 room 9 & no not ashamed for her knowing who I am because I don't like ANYONE calling me a liar when I have proof, When she was questioned by other family members she flat out lied to them about coming & checking on us. When I confronted her then she says well i have 2 other patients. Ok so why didn't you say that & not say you were just in there making me look like a liar. I am normally the one that tries to be understanding but this nurse was just out & out a Beeeeeeeeeep! Camelle I believe is how you spell that in the recovery room was AWSOME! Nurse) needs the boot.
